Navy ‘Idol’ to face viewers again tonight

By Philip Ewing - Staff writer

He was safe for a few days, but Phil Stacey, the Navy’s singing sailor on “American Idol,” has to outperform his competitors at 8 p.m. tonight if he wants to stay on the show.

Stacey, a musician third class with the Navy Band in Jacksonville, Fla., must convince viewers to call or text more votes for him than for the nine other remaining male singers. The 10 female singers perform Wednesday, and then all the performers will learn on an episode Thursday whether they advance to the next round or go home.

Stacey, who missed the birth of his third child to audition for “Idol” in Memphis, Tenn., is on temporary assigned duty to Los Angeles.
