I called my recruiter to find out if i got my MOS yet i selected at meps last week, but he told me that one of his recruits called him at meps and they told him down there that the bmt got approved already and that the boot camp was changed to 8 weeks alreadythis october 1st. (2007) , i tried to clarify whether it was 2008 or 2007 and he said it was 2007 so when i leave in feb 2008 i'm goning to have the "new" bmt schedule, I say new because it's not the 1st time it was like this since the 60's. but yeah. cool i love it. i'm even more excited now. i heard if they actually implented this it would be in nov. 2008. i'm excited now :) :) :)
just to be sure is this really true????

First off my young padawan, you need to drop the MOS thing. Last I heard, you joined the AF and we do not have MOSs. We have Air Force Specialty Codes (AFSC). Just try making it though BMT using Army jargon. You will find it the longest 6 weeks of your life. Second, BMT is currently 6.5 weeks. While the extension has been approved, it has not yet been implemented. Unless the individual in question got recycled or put on hold for some reason, he should have been there 6.5 weeks (zero week does not count as a week of training). BMT may or may not be 8 weeks when you get there. Doesn't really matter does it? You still have to complete it.

Funny, I heard that it was 8 weeks months ago. But then again some Squadrons are being tested in those new dorm jobs there is learning how to battleroll a number of your laundry for deployment. So, you could be kinda late. There was a flight that we heard doing battle rolls of socks while we were still folding them.

i heard that making it 8 weeks means they will stretch Hell week to 2-3 weeks so we can be more battle ready.
Hell week was the only time when i actually felt like quitting and running home to california. (i sucked at EVERYthing; from shooting, to cleanign my weapon, to waking up at 4:30, learning the little speech we say to the enemy before we use excessive force) so for it to be more then one week would have drove me insane.

BMT was a breeze... Most of the things you are going to do like "clipping strings" are the most boring thing in the world, but hey you get to take a breather. MOS, hahahaha. I just remember a trainee i was next to said something about his MOS and i remember our MTI ripping him a new one. (it was funny). "Warrior Week" was a week long camping trip with extra stuff to do then when your in the dorms, fun stuff, just dont eat the Omlette MRE. GROSS!!!

Ring is correct, Oct '07 was when it was APPROVED. Implementation is not set for late 2008, early 2009. You will more than likely attend the current 6.5 week basic training. Having just come from Lackland recently (no, not straight from basic training or tech school, nor was I an MTI or MTL), I can assure you this is the reality of it.

Yes BMT will be 8 1/2 weeks starting November. My friend leaves in 2 weeks and she get the 6 week training but I am going to go see her graduate. I leave Jan 20th to go to BMT and I have to do the 8 1/2 weeks myself. They said it is more physical now. Oh and no you can't count "hell week" that's the first week you're there. I am just ready to get it done and overwith. Lackland AFB here I come LOL...

slight correction, it isn't called hell week it is called zero week.
Like my son who is joining the Army, He thinks it will be easier than I bet it really is. He has been determined to join since the 9-11 event. Gosh it is hard for me as a parent to let go now that he is 18. I have heard that recruiters will lie to get our sons to sign up and promise so much. Then later they don't follow thru with it since they really do not have the athority to do so. God Bless.

Some recruiters can be dishonest, but most just don't know any better and make assumptions. A recruiter is pulled from his career field and then expected to tell potential recruits about all the jobs he may not know about. Essentially, if he doesn't have everything in writing, and he should not feel bashful asking for it, then there are no promises.
Also, how the recruiter may interpret and explain some text in the contract can be different from how you interpret it, or more importantly, how the Army interprets it. The best example is the guaranteed job. In the Army and Marines, you are guaranteed training for whatever job you choose, then the Army can do whatever they want with you, like giving you a different job. The Air Force (and I believe the Navy too) guarantees you a first regular duty assignment in your job, but they can still send you TDY, SDY, or deployment in another position.
There are many great things in the military, but he just has to be sure he's joining for the right ones and has to be aware that as far as the Army is concerned (and rightly so), the needs of the the Army and country come before his own.
My son just brought up here now to his dad and I was listening too. He passed his physical today all except for his weight. He needs to gain some. They hope by 30 days. I think it could take longer. My son didn't tell me how much he is to gain. His dad told him that he needs to work out and run some so that will help him too as he is trying to gain. Then my son mentioned that his recruiter says that he needs to go to some of the drills in St. Louis for one weekend a month before he starts his basic training. When he went down for his physical they have his birth certificate and his sscard. Now we thought that they would have given that all back, my husb. just said that just hope like hell that they don't lose those. That has happend before since we know someone that had his military records lost in the military and he said he played hell to get that all back and it wan't any fun at all. I am just going to continue to pray pray pray. Thanks to all here for listening here and any input that you may have is greatly appreciated.

Look. While some Recruiters may lie and others may not know what they are talking about, in this day and age with all of the information availible, if your son can't figure out what is true/mostly true/or a lie, he just doesn't really care. Like the Army College fund. That is so funny. Same benifits everyone else gets plus the Army adds a couple of hundred. They package it all together and call it the Army College Fund. Is it really that different than the GI Bill everyone else gets? Nope but they call it something different and it works for them. Is it a lie? Nope because there really is such an animal. Does the Army give them all that $-nope the VA pays for most of it through the GI Bill. Are you likely to see the full amount? Probably not but some people do so it is perfectly legit yet some people say they were lied to. Let me put it to you this way, if it doesn't say it on the DD 1966 in block 32 and you claim it was promised to you....then you are lying since 32b you inital saying that all that was promised to you by a recruiter is in block 32a. Just make sure he is informed and he will be fine.

I'm sorry but that is how some branches work. In order to ensure that you come back, they keep your original documents. In fact, even after you enlist, some keep them until you actually ship to Basic. All you have to do is have him ask for the originals back and they have to give them back. All they are required to do is keep a copy.

basic started being 8.5 weeks in November 2008.
i know this because my boyfriend was the last group to go in under 6.5 on 20 October '08, but due to an appendicitis in November he was recycled and had to complete 8.5 weeks because he was put in with a new flight.
