Every base you go to around the military regardless of service have those that are enthusiasts of mixed martial arts. I am one of them. Some of them just like to watch and others, like myself get involved. My question is when are we going to create an All Marine Mixed Martial Arts Team. It only seems inevitable. It betters us as warriors preparing us for the fight. We can establish teams on each base and have tryouts and competitions. Plus an All Marine MMA Team to compete against the other branches and possibly enter a team into the International Fight Leage (IFL). Now that would be something I'd enlist or re-enlist for. I'm not saying that you even have to be a black belt. Believe me just because you got a MCMAP belt doesn't mean you know or can do anything. I'm a tan belt and I've got a collection of belts from people I've tapped out or knocked out. Have an open tryout regardless of belt. We want the best, not the best on paper.

great idea
i think that would only enforce the original intent of MCMAP...IMO anyway....

How many are going to be on a team? When someone breaks an arm or a leg, can their replacement be brought in before the next scheduled fight?
JHB...what was the original intent on MCMAP? To start a team?

1. to answer your question, i don't think it (MCMAP) was intended to start an MMA team. based on my memory (i EAS'd in 2002) MCMAP is a way to get Marines training to defend themselves in an environment where they may not have their weapons available. its was also intended (if my memory is correct) to sort of 'bridge the gap' between Marines in a combat arms MOS/unit and those that are not combat arms...enable them to still have a 'warrior' mentality...
*disclaimer: folks who read this may or may not agree with #1...
2. in responding to the OP, i felt the OP meant an all MMA team like how all the services have a "all (insert branch here) Basketball Team". i think an all Marine MMA team would be cool, but as we all know, the needs of the Corps come first
3. i didn't get to qualify under MCMAP before i EAS'd cuz my Gunny kept me in the shop to oversee all the hard work we had to do, surveying, packaging, DRMOing, and transporting millions of dollars of cold weather, hot weather gear in order to close a big @ss warehouse that the Corps no longer needed
4. if it was up to me, i would've been released to go qualify, at least at the tan belt level...but hard working LCpls were needed elsewhere (thanks Gunny Lobes  )

JHB, I was just being facetious, but to start a MMA Team...not going to happen. I know what the intent was for the MCMAP and the Corps is, if you remember, SHORT ON MARINES. ;)

The Marine Corps takes a lot of pride in MCMAP. It is a false sense of security for Marines. It gives many of them fat heads and they end up in bar fights. The set up of the MCMAP system is only halfway there. It is a practice thing. You must do it on a regular basis in order to be proficient in it.
As for this MMA Team. The Marine Corps was the #1 sponsor for UFC. They still sponsor the UFC. They utilize Marines like Brian Stann's (current WEC Light heavyweight champion) high profile image as an added reucruitment method. There are so many Marines invovled in this that are at all levels of the echelon. It is sure to happen, the question is how soon.
There is a standing policy regarding MMA and Marines. The Marine Corps is okay with it. They like the idea that Marines are going above and beyond and training themselves to be that warrior. But in regards to Marines getting injured and nondeployable. The Marine Corps leaves that up to each individual unit. Obviously if a Marine is constantly getting injured then something is wrong. Most likely that Marines training regime

I personally don't see why we shouldn't have one. I mean Marines get to go and try out for things like the All Marine Chess Team and the All Marine Cross Country Team. So why not have an All Marine Mixed Martial Arts Team? It would make sense to me to give Marines that opportunity if we're going to send a Marine TAD to play chess.

I've been in almost 15 years and I've never heard about the ALL MARINE CHESS TEAM. WOW!!! Maybe the Corps should start a MMA Team.

Is this an event I'd be able to get TAD or PTAD orders for?

Do you know of any other events?
I always have a hard time convincing each of my commands I go to that this is a legitimate sport. It is not like I am out bar fighting. There are rules, judges, referees, doctors, trainers, etc. A lot of time and preparation goes into this. But every time you say I do MMA someone automatically thinks oh he must be a bad ass. I'm gonna have to watch out for him. I have never once been injured through training or competition in the last 6 years doing this. But I've been injured many times through unit PT, work, car accident, dirtbike wreck, etc. This sport is a lot safer than what people really think. There has to be a way to open their eyes and show them that. Show them that this is one of the best sportsman like conduct/respectable sports today.

OK to answer the questions regarding a so-called Marine Corps MMA team. There used to be a (West Coast) Marine Corps Pankration team. (I was on it) But it got disbanded after one tournament and was reassembled as the Marine Corps Submission Wrestling team. There were two teams one at SOI(w) and one based out of Camp Margarita (Both camps are on Camp Pendleton) and then they became one. I have fought in numerous tournaments and a couple through SoCal Pankration / Fightleague and they are great fun. I suggest everyone try it out. I will be participting in the one mentioned above.
Another point the purpose of MCMAP is definately not to make u a proficient ground fighter, or a great striker it's to give people tools to fight, and defend themselves. Not to win a tournament somewhere. Yes the techniques were developed by Subject Matter Experts (SMEs) in different martial arts but they were designed and added to MCMAP because of their relative ease to execute, and effectiveness when used by people of all shapes, strengths, and sizes. Now will MCMAP work against all opponents? No. Will MCMAP work against our average everyday dumb-a$$? Yes.
Lastly the Marine Corps developed MCMAP not to only each Marines how to fight but how to act and live positively through periods of instruction on ethics, ethos, and morals. If all you do is get "thrashed" or learn a few techniques and get a belt you are getting shorted. If your chain of command is telling you there is no time to get you to the next belt level I want to see what the unit's program is for physical fitness. Per the Marine Corps Order every Marine is required to participate in 3 hours of PT a week. MCMAP is trying to get away from these 3 week MCMAP-a-thons were you train for 8 hours a day or some odd number and get a belt at the end of a ceremony (accept in the case of authorized instructor courses). Every unit should have some level of instructor and they should be able to find a way to integrate the normal unit PT and MCMAP. To get a gray belt it's approximately 35 hours of instruction with sustainment, techniques, and tie-ins. If your unit can't make that happen you should also remind them (using act, and bearing) that per the MarAdmin the CMC has stated every non-infantry Marine will be a gray belt and every infantry/combat arms MOS should be green belt by FY09. Another way is to get with an instructor during your off time (how, after work) and have him/her train you up. Initiative can be contagious and if u get your other Marines and Sailors will want to get their belts.

Yes, MARINES, there is a Chess Club. It exists as certainly as MCCS and MBST and deployment exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. :D

So, how would we go about setting up a MMA team? I know some Marines that started thier own club back in 29; Fight Club 29. If the Corps had an MMA team, it would deffinatly boost enlistments, renlistments, and troop morale. The question is: Who do we need to contact to start this team?

They are already in the process. At the wrestling gym on Camp Lejuene. they are doing training everyday after work. around 1800. Saturday july 25th, they are holding a competition. the Top 2 Marines in each weight class will be awarded with TAD orders to the all marine MMA team. i believe it will be just like the boxing team.. Everyday, your appointed place of duty will be the gym where you will work out 2-3 times a day. and im sure they will incorperate some kind of community service with training kids or something just like the boxing team..
Sounds good to me.. :D

If I am not mistaken, the event on July 25th is for Brazillian Jiu Jitsu for tryouts for the All Marine Jiu Jitsu Team not MMA. I may be wrong so if anyone would like to elaborate please do. I would be VERY interested in trying out for an All Marine MMA Team.

Thats what it is advertised as. However, one of my friends is the boxing coach for the team, and "Might be" the head coach. but thats undecided.
I saw the link on MCCSLejuene.com, But i can tell you with 100% confidence that it is infact MMA.
