I am considering un accompanied 2 year orders to Guam. I need to find out if I can get BAH back here in the states for my family while I am getting OHA there for myself.
In the OPNAV it has restricted/unaccompanied.....does that mean BAH only for restricted areas overseas where dependents can't go and the member is unaccompanied ....or is it either or unaccomapnaied or restricted...I am confused and not geting straight answers from PSD.
Help????????
Thanks,
I can't help you with your dilemma, but unless there is some serious reason why your spouse and kids can't go, I'd really consider taking them. I've talked to people with families who have loved it there.
Good luck with finding the answers you need, whichever way you decide.

If you go unaccompanied to a location that dependents are allowed you get BAH for where your dependents are. I think you can change it to where you are, but believe it automatically set to dependents.
Restricted/unaccompanied means No dependents are allowed and you have to go there unaccompanied (i.e. Bahrain, for the time being). In that case you receive OHA = to the amount you pay in rent for where you are, nothing more if you are able to live off base, and BAH for where your dependents are. Unless you are single and your dependents are child(ren) that you pay child support for (i.e. someone else has custody) then you do not receive the BAH or FSA for your dependents.

Why aren't your dependents allowed to come? I just moved to Florida from Guam last week and lived there for 2 years. My husband is still there but has to move to barracks until he joins us in the states so we can get BAH. The BAH goes by where your dependents are. I would HIGHLY recommend taking them. I LOVED being in Guam and there were fun things to do there. Guam is not unaccompanied by far.

Here is a good resource for info: http://usmilitary.about.com/od/housingallowance/l/blbahrules.htm
Sabrina is correct...if the location is restricted, that means dependents are not authorized to accompany. Diego Garcia is a good example. There is no family housing there. Guam is not a dependent restricted location, so it is your choice to bring/not bring them. Many factors weigh in there (kids are in a good school they love, wife has a high paying job, etc) for determining if they should accompany you or not. However, I must echo some of the other posters in that if there is no special reason not to take them, you really should.

From my time there on the Frank cable, if your dependants get BAH for their local when you go elsewhere unacompanied, you wind up living in the barracks as a geo bachelor. So you don't get OHA
