It appears the two presidential candidates have been debating this. I was curious what you guys thought.

Yes as far as I'm concerned. If women expect equal rights, they should have to assume equal responsibilities.

Well honestly it's not something I've ever really thought about.
BUT, since I like to earn equal pay for a job and I like knowing I can share and succeed at the same jobs or skills or resposibilites as a man. I'd have to say yes.
I can't lift a refrigerator at work but I have helped life dryers, washers, toilets etc and I loaded a cart full of 50 lb bags of salt for an elderly gentleman into his car...so yes, I still think if there's Selective Service women should have to sign up also.

Yes, absolutely for the reasons the ladies mentioned.
Not that it matters - no one will ever use the draft again unless we are actually threatened with a physical invasion... which ain't ever going to happen while we have such an edge in naval and air superiority not to mention nuclear deterrence. Heck, as stretched thin as our forces are - particularly the Army and Marines, a draft would probably be a good idea these last 4-6 years.
But, yes, women should have to register for Selective Service. Anything else is discriminatory, unfair and wrong.

I am a female Army Veteran. Yes, I believe women should sign up for Selective Service. Besides my son, my proudest moments were my Military Service. Stay Safe!

I think and have thought for a while that the requirements should be the same. Can't make them sign up just like you can't make a male but they should have the same results-no federal student aid etc... Fair is fair. Just because there isn't a draft and probably won't be isn't an excuse for the inequality in the law.

Right on, women have been making equal contrabutions to our nation for more years than I can count.
Equal is equal and they should be forced to sign up, just like us guys.

i dont even believe in the draft. as a veteran i dont like the idea of being forced to serve. this was disasterous in the vietnam war. a lot of women may not want to serve but some may. i say just leave it alone.
Yes, I believe women should register for selective service. As long as one gender must do it, both should be doing it.

Why is this an issue when the draft has not even been debated yet. I would think that the draft should only apply to women if women are first given the right to man male dominated roles. But then we have a problem dont we.

Yes, he did - in 1980 at a post office in Hawaii. This is nothing more than a nasty rumor, along the same lines as McCain fathering two black babies, etc.
To the issue at hand - yes, women should register. A citizen of any gender should be responsible for the duties and burdens of citizenship, not just the benefits. We may or may not agree with the draft in principle or in any particular application, but that doesn't excuse the responsibility in any way.
Vietnam was not a failure of the draft - it was a failure of the American people to properly express their wishes by voting and holding the elected officials responsible for their actions. Stepping out of the process because you do not agree with it is not the way to fix the process.

Yes, emphatically. I say this because I don't want any of our kids to be forced to fight unless the cause is just. Drafting women will, I hope, make us more thoughtful about the necessity of drafting anyone. I come from a Navy family and my father served in WWII and Korea. He was adamantly opposed to the war in Vietnam and took a lot of heat for his opposition. He believed it was a rich man's war and those who fought were disproportionately working class kids. Although I grew up in Navy towns do you think I knew anyone who served in Vietnam? Hell no. The kids of officers didn't get drafted. They got deferments, went to college or went to the Academies where they might then serve but under much different circumstances. In the future, if we draft, we should draft everyone, no exceptions based on gender, wealth or influence. This makes it a lot more likely we will not wage unjust wars.
And P.S. I am well aware of Senator John McCain's exceptional service. Indeed, he comes from a long line of Navy men who fought for this country. My father, who was a Navy Helldiver pilot during WWII, was awarded the Navy Cross for heroism during the battle of Kure Bay, Japan in July, 1945. The temporary citation, which was given to him before the medal was formally awarded, was signed by Vice Admiral J.S. (John Sidney) McCain, grandfather of Senator McCain.

Maybe we should draft women and make them all drill sergeants and they can run the boot camps. They would bitch, oh, I mean whip you guys into shape in no time. Hell, I'm going down to enlist right now. I would be reallly good at that job. Do I get to carry a gun?

I say let women register for Selective Service. They've been flying combat aircraft for the longest time now, so it seems to make sense that they should be able to shoulder the responsibility of national defense no differently than the men. When it comes to equal rights, you can't cherry pick these things. It's either all or none.

Very true, I wonder what NOW thinks about all this.
Women have been proven in combat, all the way back to WWII on the russian front.
THE MILITARY SELECTIVE SERVICE ACT (MSSA)
It purpose which is written in the act itself is to provide for the common defense by increasing the strength of the Armed Forces of the United States, including the reserve components thereof, and for other purposes.
After reading that surely the answer is yes, make them do it too. Simply put the more the better right.

I think that women should have to register with the Selective Service. They fought for the right to be treated like men. This is it. The draft likely will not come back because of Vietnam. Require women to register and then run them through the same system as the men. If they make combat infantry, that's great. If not, I had a grandfather that went through bootcamp three times before he was at the "Army" fitness level. Women have been proven in combat and if you are willing to give them a $500 million fighter jet, I am willing to issue them a rifle when the time comes.

I agree with this. Women should have to register with the selective service. It will certainly make people more reflective about a draft. However, I don't for one minute believe that a draft will never again be used. It's only a matter of time.

Yes.
The restrictions on combat roles for the ladies should be eliminated as well.
Only way I see a draft being reinstated would be if war was declared. Last time that happened was Dec. 1941, and yes I am aware of what happened in Korea, the Tonkin Gulf Resolution, etc.

This is a great idea. Seems fair enough. It will not become a law in this nation until a major paradigm shift happens. What politician would vote to "send your daughters and mothers to die". I can hear the campaign ads now.

hmm... considering i seriously considered signing up for the military numerous times without having anyone force me to do it-- i would be perfectly fine with registering for the selective service. now, do i think someone should stick me out on the front lines? well... if you want me to shoot some terrorists sure... but if you think that there is any freakin' way that i can drag my 200 lb. brother-in-arms out of harms way when he's wounded-- ya'll need your heads checked. i'm 5'2" and 125 lbs. muscles? yeah... i got 'em. but not for that stuff!

Well said Ladykt. Too often on other boards i frequent when this subject comes up there are a lot of naysayers, going on about the 'poor women' But here and on on of my gaming convention sites, it seems the opposite is true. With more women saying yes than ever.

Females make good Soldiers in traditional female jobs.
A female in a combat arms unit would do great harm.
Men are stronger and MEANER than women.

Another draft is not why men have to do it, it is because men cant get gov jobs nor gov scholarships without signing up. Forget about equality when you get in, just make it equal for the civilian jobs. If the military has the be completely EO, are we going to put everyone that is confined to a wheelchairon the front lines if they want to be there? Sorry, the truth is that men with complete use of their bodies will dominate 50-100 women they come accross.
What is the argument to keep it as is anyways? The selective service is a civilian based punishment if you dont sign up, so bringing in what the military does is moot.
