Hello all,
I served a couple of years in the army from 1972 to 1974 and 18 months with 2nd Squad, 2nd Plt, Bravo Co., 1/6th Infantry, 1st Armored Div in Illesheim, W. Gemrany back in '73 and '74. I and a buddy were in an Army Surplus store the other day and were looking at some webgear from our good ol' "Vietnam//Cold war era" such as "H" strap suspenders, butt-packs, etc.. I want to recreate my webgear or field gear that I was issued and used. I remember what all was attached to my webgear and how, except for one thing, the sleeping bag. We were never issued the huge monstrous packs that you see today, and only once in a NATO Wargame in Greece were we issued an alice type pack. All other times, and we stayed in the boonies, patrolling the Iron Curtain, etc.., we just wore our regular webgear and 3-day buttpacks. If we had to tote our sleeping bags we hooked them up to our suspenders on our upper backs up above the butt pack. But for the life of me I can't remember how or with what that sleepign bag attached to those suspenders? Anyone know? I have seen some later things that were issued in later years, but not with us.
I bought me an Army sleeping bag and one of those strap sets that you wrap it up with to secure it. The only thing I see hanging off is some straps that evidently double back and snap onto themselves. Did those straps pass through those loops on the upper back or shoulder area of the suspenders then snap back on themselves to secure the sleeping bag to the suspenders? I can't believe I can't remember, but 30 odd years is a long time away from "the field" my brethren. Anyhelp or ideas will be most appreciated.
Thanks,
