JACKSONVILLE, N.C. — A North Carolina-based Marine officer was awarded the Bronze Star with a combat “V” on Monday for his actions last year in Iraq.
Maj. Mark E. Slusher, 2nd Marine Logistics Group’s operations officer, received the medal in a ceremony at Camp Lejeune.
As a military transition team leader working with the Iraqi army from April 1 to April 28, 2008, Slusher advised an Iraqi battalion commander leading his team through combat operations that “cleared multiple insurgent strongholds and [weapons] cache sites throughout the city of Basra,” according to a 2nd MLG news release.
While enduring enemy small-arms fire, Slusher also pulled five injured teammates from a vehicle hit by makeshift bomb, officials said. He then moved them to safety and administered first aid, according to the release.
