So I went to MEPS in Los Angeles yesterday and passed everything so far. I went to my service counselor before I swore in to get my MOS. I asked for a certain date so that friend and I can leave at the same time. I scored pretty high on my ASVAB so he looked up the date and everything I'm qualified for. I qualify for so many jobs too. The only thing is he said the date I wanted to leave wasn't offering any of the jobs I wanted. So, he put me down to be a Machinist Mate (MM), which I don't want at all. He said those were the only job openings. He told me to just put it down so I can finish my day at MEPS and swear in, then I will later be able to change my job through my recruiter. I am wondering how I can do that the right way and make sure I get what I want. If anyone can please help me, I will appreciate it dearly. My shipping date is May 26, 2009 by the way if anybody needs to know.
I have a schedule with my recruiter Tuesday of next week, but I want to know what to tell him to make sure I get what I want. I was told to threaten that I will not join if I don't get what I want. Then if I do get it ,to get all of it written by hand and signed, (Contract)

I'm not a recruiter, but I'm almost 100% certain that a recruiter can't change the rate in which you've been assigned.
It might require another trip to MEPS to straighten out. Don't get discouraged though. Are you familiar at all with the different Navy Rates? If not, check this page out http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_United_States_Navy_ratings
If you need to, send me a personal email and I'll explain a rate to you a little more if you think it's something you wan to do. It's better to go in with too much information, then very little.

You should not have picked a job and sworn in to a job that you really don't want. The classifier should not have told you to have your recruiter change it later, because that's usually not going to happen. It is next to impossible to get someone a specific job, on a specific date. You need to be more flexible with ship dates if you want to change your job. If the date and leaving with your friend is most important, than stick with MM.

Be flexible or just don't ship out. The swearing in at MEPS doesn't mean anything. You got a job reservation and a date to go to RTC. You are not in the Navy until you ship out. If you don't like what you got then don't go. The Navy is currently downsizing which means they don't really need someone who doesn't want to be there. Good luck.
Yeah you might need to review your priorities. Shipping out with a friend your more then likely will never see again unless you plan leave together or get stationed in the same geographic location or getting the job that you feel fits your wants and needs. I'll take the job any day of the week!
