I just read an article in December 2008 issue of SEAPOWER magazine (Navy League of the U.S. publication) about the successor of NMCI. It’s called NGEN (Next Generation Enterprise Network). Of course it references some of the troubles experienced with the transition to NMCI. But the thing that struck me was that NGEN is supposed to be implemented by 2010. Geez, as a DON contractor, I just got transitioned to NMCI in late 2008. I know there are others still waiting to be transitioned. And there are still DON civilian employees awaiting the transitions too. I have to say too that like many others, I do not like the NMCI service. I’ve heard that in the fleet NMCI wasn’t an easy transition in general. In the article the NGEN lead contractor, EDS (Electronic Data Systems), says the transition from NMCI to NGEN won’t have all the problems that the transition to NMCI had. Riiiight. So, are there Navy people out there…active duty, civilians, contractors…that haven’t been transitioned to NMCI yet? I’m wondering if they’ll be completely skipped over and go right to NGEN.
