This is a repost from another area, but I thought I'd get more response here - sorry if you read it twice. So we are finally going to see the Air Force recruiter tomorrow and I am excited. I am also very nervous that he will feed me all sorts of lies to get me enlisted. I have heard recently that most branches have met their quota and so they are not pressured to get everyone to sign which might result in more honesty. I don't know if that is true, but I am still nervous. Me and my hubby have prepared a list of questions but I want to know if there is one thing we should make sure to ask or to ask for? I have college credits and I am going to make sure I can start as an E-2 (or so I've been told). Is there anything else I could get in writing such as a job / particular base / etc? Thanks so much for your help!!

Just let him know what your interested in doing and pay little attention to any job pitches he might make. I really think you should consider intel If you meet the requirements for a Top Secret clearence, we really need folks as Imagery Anlaysts and Intel Applications Analysts.

Don't mention that your time is too valuable to do PT or they'll put you in Aircraft Maintenance.

Do you have an idea of what you would like to do. If so, dont sign unless you get the job you want. Remeber, that recruiter needs you to sign more then you need to. So get the job you want and dont let them bully you. It's like going to see a car salesman. They are going to tell you what you wna to hear to get you to sign the paper. (not saying they will lie but they are tourgh sales techniques) Also depending on the number of credits you have I think you can come in higer than E-2. I came in E-3 and I think it was because of college credits. I cant remember for sure though.

You want a guaranteed job. Don't go in open. And if you don't like what you're hearing get up and leave. It's like buying a car. He wants to make a sale. You want the best deal.

Yes indeed. Wait on delayed entry for a better job - if need be. Its one thing to serve your country and live by a code - its another thing to actually "enjoy the ride!"

Everybody that joins the AF now list at least 4 jobs and the job area(mech, admin, general, or electronic). You say no to an area you dont join. There are a few exceptions to the rule. Bachelors degree, know somebody improtant in the AF. I have only booked about 50% in the GTEP(particular job). Everybody else get the area and you get to pick your job form the area list at basic. You dont get guarenteed job X will be on the list though.

Everybody that joins gets put into the DEP and on average has to wait about 3 months to join. If you list ASAP to leave you coudl leave on short notice but its rare. I have had maybe 20 people list ASAP and one left after 1.5 weeks. Next closest was1.5 months. You can try to quick ship or use the move up list but they dont always work.

Yep if you dont like what you are hearing leave. There is a line of people behind you waiting to join. You wont hurt thre recruiters feelings he is probably so busy with people that want to join he will only be disapointed that you waisted his time.

False. You need the Air Force, the Air Force does not need you. THe AF has so much to offer you and all you do is go to work and do the job you are trained to do. If you dont decide to join the Air Force will still make goal with no problems what so ever. We have missed goal 1 year in the last 30(ten years ago) and that was just because of bad planing.

The recruiter you will see will not "pitch" jobs to you. If he does he is a poor recruiter and probably has a HUGE cancellation rate. Recruiter have very little to do with what job you get booked in. We will "pitch" the Air Force and all the benefits that come with it. The reason we dont "pitch" jobs is because we have not idea what you are eligible for till you take the asvab and phsyical. Then you wont talk to us about jobs you will talk to the meps liason about what jobs you are eligible for. Unless you have a bachelors degree or you know somebody you will list 4 jobs and the job area you are interested in. The AF will only book you in one of your choices. Be it the particular job or the area they fall under(mech, admin, general, electrical)

That being said if you are the recruiter will probably talk to you about PJ/CCT/TACP/SERE /linguist because they require a special test, they have enlsitment bonus', and count for hard to fill competition points.(pj/cct/tacp is male only) I talk very little about these jobs till after they DEPPER has made it through MEPS and wants to join the AF becuase a large amount of times they are not qualified for them. If you are quald for them I will talk to you in detail about them during your DEP brief.

Ha. My recruiter pitched me crew chief everytime I went in, even though I told him I had no interest. Nothing wrong with the career field, it just wasnt for me. I dont like working on my car, so I wouldnt enjoy doing that everyday. Luckily I had a mentor that was in the AF that guided me to a career that I love and have been doing for 10 years. Had I listened to the recruiter, I would have gotten out after my furst 4 years were up. He did bring up a couple others but I told him what I wanted to do, several times, he did help me get the job I wanted.

Poor recruiters may "pitch" easily booked jobs, but those are also the same recruiters that have sky high cancellation rates. If they get your hopes up for a job and you are not eligible, or do not book in that job, its asking for a Can. If anything they make us pitch special forces if you come back from meps and you are asvab/phys quald for the PAST test. Thats about it. I will also mention the DLAB if are linguist quald but not until you have put down the 4 jobs/aptitude area required of 99% of processors.

When it comes to talking jobs during the initial apt I will let you know how the job counseling process works and let you know if you are interested in easily booked or rarely booked jobs. Thats it. I could care less if you come in and say you want to list public affairs and med jobs. I will let you know you can list what ever you want but if you list small career fields(PA has 11 GTEPS out of 33k)you will most likely book in the aptitude area.

That's true, once he found out my ASVAB scores he did try and sell linguist, but I knew what I wanted to do, plus I couldnt choose the language I wanted. But I didnt have to put down 4 jobs/aptitude area's. I went to meps, told them the job I wanted and they had 2 of that job that opened up, and my scores were good enough and I got the job.

My advice, stay in school work hard and get your degree in a field that has a future. Network engineering or something similar. If you are determined to join the service ensure you go into a job that offers skills in the real world. Look at what companies need today. Then go into a field that offers similar training.

Do your homework. know what you are getting into. This is YOUR future.

If I had to do it over again. That's what I would have done. But my recruiter screwed me LMAO

Grass is always greener on the other side. Do you have any idea of the % of people that start college and dont finish? Even if you have a degree that doesnt guarentee you a great job. I have so many people come by my office 100k in college loan debt, and no good job to show for it. They cant even become an officer because they are too far in debt to get an FED approved or they cant pass the AFOQT.

If you got "screwed" by your recruiter like you say that shows how niave you are by not doing any research. How long have you been in the AF and are you still in?

If you go up to MEPS shortly after a job drop and they have jobs that have not been booked they can offer particular jobs on the spot. I have had this happen a couple of times in the past. It is becoming increasingly rare though because we have so many people on the Q&W there tends to be very, very little left over jobs.
