NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin said he’ll probably ask to keep about 100 National Guardsmen in the city past the end of the year.
Soldiers have helped patrol less-populated neighborhoods since mid-2006 to allow police to focus on curbing violent crime.
Earlier this year, the governor announced plans to phase out the troops by year’s end. Their ranks are down from 360 to 260.
The city has sought repeated extensions to allow the department, whose ranks were thinned by Hurricane Katrina, time to beef up. Nagin believes the department is making strides and will exceed pre-Katrina staffing levels next year.
The department expects to have 1,550 officers by year’s end, about 100 shy of pre-Katrina levels.

Nagin could just have his police violate everyone's 2nd Amendment Rights and start confiscating firearms like they illegally did after Katrina. That should give the illusion he's doing something.
This guy is a total tool, and so is everyone in New Orleans who voted to re-elected him. Neither I nor my wife will ever willingly set foot in New Orleans again as long as this jackhole is still mayor.

The new Governor now is on point. Imagine that, the guy doing a great job is a Republican; and the guy doing an aweful job and is continually reelected by playing off of the lower classes feelings, is a flaming liberal.

Kind of like Barney Frank. When my cousin was stationed in Dover, he said that noone there likes Biden except the DuPont family and they are the only ones who vote up there so there you go.

Lady KT got it. The US Congress essentially took over management of the city.

Hey, I wasn't claiming it was a better situation but it certainly speaks of Barry's ability to lead a city. Or not lead a city.

NEW ORLEANS — New Orleans Police Superintendent Warren Riley says he will not seek to extend the National Guard’s stay in the city.
Guard troops have been helping the police department patrol parts of the city since June 2006, but they are scheduled to pull out of New Orleans at the end of February.
Riley recently faced tough questions from state lawmakers about the cost and need for the troops more than three years after Hurricane Katrina. On Thursday, the superintendent said he would keep his word and not seek another extension.
Riley said the department lost hundreds of officers after Katrina but has seen lower rates of attrition in its ranks and now has about 1,500 officers.
