So, I just enlisted in the Air National Guard and I'm thrilled. My career choice was 2E2X1 - Computer Network Switching and Crypto Systems. I just read an article on Air Force Times that listed the most deployed jobs, and mine wasn't listed anywhere. I have to be honest, I'm a little disappointed, as I definitely want to deploy. Is there anyone that knows of jobs that honestly never deploy? I always thought that there was always a shot for just about any job... I'm just curious. I know things can always change at a moments notice. Any thoughts?

Seems to me they've got networks and crypto downrange, so they'd need you... just because you are not the most deployed, doesn't mean you won't get your shot.

Welcome to my career field. Here's some basic advice I give many of my students (yes, I'm a 2e2x1 instructor):

1) Comprehension is not a requirement for compliance
2) Education supercedes recreation and attempted procreation
3) Don't get married to anyone while in tech school (unless you're already engaged prior to enlisting). Definitely don't marry anyone you meet at Keesler while at Keesler.
4) Instructors and MTL's already know most of the crap Airmen try to get away with. After all, we were tech schoolers once too.

Best of luck.

Regarding deployments, with the number of ILO taskings (or whatever they call them these days), your AFSC might not have as much influence on your deployment opportunities as it did in the past. I spent 6 months in Afghanistan last year driving in convoys, riding in the turret with an M2 .50 cal, and doing a lot of other non 2E2 related stuff. It was a nice break from my normal routine here.

Thanks for this info - since you said you are an instructor, could I pick your brain for a second?

I toured the shop I would be working in prior to enlisting to get an idea of the actually job. It sounded good, hence why I chose it. But, I'll admit, I'm a bit intimidated by the amount of knowledge necessary. I really don't know to much about computer networking and all that.

I guess what I want to know, is as long as I apply myself - should I be ok? I've heard there is a high wash out rate, so I'll admit I'm a little nervous. Any words of wisdom you can pass on?

1. Agree
2. Agree
3. ROFLMAO! So true
4. That's right, you have to be more creative then they were.

I was wondering what was it like when you first enlist in the AF? Do you meet from all over and do you plan making a career out of it?

Speaking only for myself, I planned on doing four years and getting out. 21 years later...
