Noncommissioned officer promotions will improve sharply in March, with 3,000 active component soldiers moving up to the ranks of sergeant through sergeant major.
March cutoff scores and senior NCO sequence numbers released by the Army in late February authorize 47 advancements to sergeant major, 198 to master sergeant, 225 to sergeant first class, 1,032 to staff sergeant and 1,478 to sergeant.
The 2,980 total represents nearly 1,200 more promotions than in February, one of the worst promotion months in several years.
The new sequence numbers will complete the January 2008 sergeant first class list, which originally had 8,620 names.
The 2009 sergeant first class board adjourned Feb. 22, following a file review of about 30,000 promotion candidates.
The results of that board are projected for release in mid- to late March.
That means the Army could begin promoting off the new list in April.
March promotions to sergeant and staff sergeant will go to soldiers in an eligibility pool that includes 17,380 corporals and specialists, and 16,609 sergeants.
