Hey guys, I've been in for 15 years. I'm about to do a UTA and then go straight to orders. I am being told by Finanace that since I am in the area after drill, I will not get mileage or a travel day.
I live 165 miles from the base and in another state. I'm also not getting a travel day home. On the last day of my orders, I am scheduled to work a 12 hour shift. So, I'll be in uniform for 15 hours that day.
My question is this. Even though I will be at a UTA the day before orders, why wouldn't I still get paid mileage at the minimum? I shouldn't be on a UTA status. I should be allowed a travel day.
So, to sum it up, I'll be at UTA this weekend. I'll be on orders this Monday. I get nothing for that. Not mileage, no nothing.
Is this right? Am I not entitled to something here? My travel voucher, for the first time in my life, will start with the destination, and not HOR. I think this is wrong. Any ideas?

It's called "In Place" You should get paid for your last day on orders. IE) Say you pull a Manday on Friday prior to the UTA, you get paid for travel, you do your UTA, when you leave on Sunday, even though you are on UTA status, they pay for you to go home. They paid for you to get there, they have to pay for you to go home.
Good luck.... If you have issues go to the IG...

Well, that's the problem. They aren't paying for me to get there. I'm doing a UTA this weekend. They won't pay to get me there.
Then, starting on Monday, I'm on orders. I'm not getting paid to get there. The only thing I get is mileage back home when my order end on the 14th. No travel days even though I'll pull a 12 hour shift and have to drive home 2 1/2 hours.
They say I am UTA status the entire weekend, so I don't get paid anything to come back. Nor can I leave after drill.

My 2 cents. It should be just like the rules for an IMA. As long as your ADT or man days are included when you do your UTA, your travel should be covered. i will see if I can find anything in the AFIs/JFTR... Give me a little bit.
See table U7G-1 and find which rule applies to you (make sure to read note 3-says you should get paid round trip), then read the applicable reference.

Hope this helps.

Ask Finance where it says you can't leave after drill. If your UTA is standard, you would be released along with everyone else sometime Sunday afternoon. Ask why you are being singled out and not being released. Don't accept an answer that you are on orders the next day. Chances are your orders have a report time for Monday morning. Ask about the time between UTA release and that report time. Remember - Finance can't order you. Your command chain ordered you to UTA. Your command chain released you from that UTA order at a certain time on Sunday. Your commander then ordered you to report to duty on Monday at a certain time. If you get them to stutter on this, tell them you are going home when released from UTA along with everyone else. Now you should be at square one with your orders. Ask what would be the normal procedure if you started orders on any other Monday other than after UTA. Ask why those same procedures don't apply. Chances are that Finance will give you the runaround or a deer in the headlights look, so be prepared to run it up your chain. (Don't take a Finance Office issue to the IG before using your chain.)
One issue that you may need to consider before doing all of this is lodging on Sunday night. Per AFI 34-246, ANG Sup1,
"On base lodging or CL may be provided to eligible members the night in between the last day of IDT and the beginning of AT. The member will pay for this lodging expense utilizing their government issued credit card."
Note that it only says that lodging "may" be provided. If you push for mileage, you will probably lose lodging for the night.

What kind of orders are you converting to after UTA? If it is AT orders you are entitled to ONE travel day. Hence the 15 days of AT orders. So you can do 14 days and on the 15th it is a travel day. Once you convert from IDT to AT status you are entitled to all the perks. However, you are still only entitled to one travel day.
If you are converting from IDT to ADT/MPA orders you are still entitled to travel back to HOR but since you are IN PLACE from a UTA you most likely wont get travel to and from.....just from.
There was an new travel pay for UTAs change for critical AFSCs. I am not sure if you fall into one of them or not but you might want to check with your FM to see the list. If you do then there is a bonus for you. :)
And I completly agree with CA..use your chain of command before runing to the IG.

Why would they pay you a travel day if you are already in place? It has always been that way. When you fill out your 938 where are you going to say you started your travel from? You can not say you started from your HOR because you didn't. That is why most people who have to do UTA's a long way away will do a couple of mandays prior to a UTA to get paid the travel there. Every base has their own policy on how many mandays you have to do prior to you switch to UTA status.
As for the travel afterward. Your day does not end until 2359. hence they do not pay you an extra day just the mileage. However if you get home at 0001 you would get paid that extra day.
