The Army has again reduced its fiscal 2009 active recruiting goal, which now stands at 65,000 soldiers, Recruiting Command reported April 10.

The active goal was previously reduced March 5, from 78,000 to 71,000 new soldiers for the year.

The shrinking goal for the fiscal year, ending Sept. 30, could be attributed in part to the success of the Army’s retention programs in 2008, which was considered the most successful recruiting year since 2004. The Army announced March 24 it was scaling back its retention goal for the year, from 65,500 down to 55,000.

One factor that may contribute to the Army’s recent success in getting and keeping soldiers is the economic downturn. In the civilian employment market, hundreds of thousands of jobs have been lost in recent months and the outlook for coming months is uncertain.

The Army continues to exceed its monthly recruitment goals, the Department of Defense reported.

In March, the active Army reached 102 percent of its 6,425-soldier goal, having recruited 6,548 new active-duty soldiers.

The Army National Guard hit 6,255 new soldiers last month, or 126 percent of its March goal of 4,974.

The Reserve recruits totaled 3,582 soldiers in March, or 151percent of its goal of 2,380, according to Recruiting Command figures.

The end of March marked the Army’s halfway point in its fiscal year.

As of March 30, the year-to-date recruiting total for active Army was 34,320, or nearly 53 percent of its new 2009 goal.

The Guard had recruited 35,892 soldiers, or 55 percent of the fiscal year goal of 65,000.

And the Reserve reached 15,068 soldiers, or almost 57 percent of its 2009 goal of 26,500.
