Hi, I just registered to this site about 5 mins ago because I am concerned about my MOS in the marines. I have already took my asvab and am going to take my physical in 2 days. My recruiter had told me that I will have to sign stuff after i pass my physical. He also told me that we will take care of my MOS around september so I will have first dibs on the MOS I want. My question is, is my recruiter trying to trick me into signing an open contract? Am I suppose to sign my MOS contract after my physical? Or is he being legit and can I sign my MOS contract in september while already being in the DEP program?

Thank you.

Until the day you leave for boot camp, you can get out of the dep. Just make sure your MOS is locked in before you ship. On the other hand, you should want to be a Marine either way, no matter your MOS. Just avoid admin and food service.

Eh, I disagree. You can't be obligated to something for 4 years or more doing something you don't like. I wouldn't want my title of Marine if I was doing something I didn't like.

My recruiter did the same thing, I was supposed to be one MOS, the day of it was something different with promises of a bonus, then all the sudden I get my actual MOS in boot camp because I was contract. I'd just make sure your MOS is locked in, and if you don't have one, you don't have to go to boot camp. You don't have to go, you're recruiter will make you think you do, but you don't.

I went about it the wrong way and was just happy to be joining, lucky for me I got a good MOS.

In order to be assigned a program (job field) in the Marine Corps you have to be mentally, morally, and physically qualified. So if you don't go through the physical, how can you be physically qualified? Plus, open contract is a jacked up term, it should be refered to as "General Enlistment." Whats the difference you ask? Open contract, the Marine Corps picks your job for you, because you didn't pick one for yourself. General Enlistment, means you go into the delayed entry program, then sit down with your recruiter and/or their NCOIC and pick your program that you are QUALIFIED for, and is available. Most recruting stations won't let you go to recruit training with an open contract, and if they do, about 10 Marines in the process will counsel you about why you have an open contract and haven't picked your job. Hopefully this clears things up.
