I'm coming up on my 5 year mark, and am eligible for re-enlistment. There is a possibility I will need to re-enlist in order to take Formal Training starting in July.

I currently have a 2 SRB modifier. I went out to AFPC and looked at the website, which says (Relevant Paragraphs cut and pasted from AFPC Web Site):

How long you can reenlist for, if you reenlist early or have an extension (served or unserved) will be determined by how much obligated service you have left from your current enlistment or extension (served or unserved).

When computing SRBs, the member will be paid for the additional years reenlisted and not for any prior obligated service. Do not include obligated service when computing SRB payments.

If I have a year left on my re-enlistment, does this mean I can only re-up for 5 years instead of 6? (I'm reenlisting regardless because I like what I do but I want to make sure I have the information that I need.)

What it means is that if you reenlist a year early...you can reelnist for 6 years, but you will only get your SRB for the 5 that go past your current ETS.

So... today is 19 May 09. Let's say your current ETS is 19 May 10. You can re-up today for 6 years...taking you to, 19 May 15...BUT, you will only get an SRB for 5 years, since you were already committed to the one year.

Does that make sense?

Exactly the answer I needed. Thanks. :)

EDIT: Hopefully I get a little lucky and don't have to reenlist quite yet then, the extra year's worth of SRB money would be a nice boon.
