The first Air Guardsman will assume the chief enlisted spot in U.S. Northern Command and North American Aerospace Defense Command on June 1.
Chief Master Sgt. W. Allen Usry replaces Army Command Sgt. Maj. Daniel R. Wood, who is retiring, as the chief enlisted adviser of the joint American-Canadian command responsible for North American defense.
“I am very excited for the opportunity to serve in Norad and U.S. Northern Command,” Usry said in a NorthCom press release.
“As a former firefighter and EMT with the Tulsa Fire Department and Air National Guard firefighter who preformed search and rescue at the Murrah Federal Building in Oklahoma City, having the opportunity to serve in this position has added meaning for me,” Usry said, referring to the 1995 Oklahoma City bombing.
Usry began his military career as a Marine in 1982. After retiring from the Corps, Usry joined the Oklahoma Air Guard in 1988.
In his previous assignment, Usry was the Command Chief Master Sergeant for the 1st Air Force and Air Forces Northern, based at Tyndall Air Force Base, Fla.
