View Full Version : Question on transfer before Basic?

I have a ship date for BCT with the Army Reserve in September and was selected as an OCS Candidate. Throughout the process I have continually realized that things are not exactly as originally presented by the recruiter. He did tell me after the fact that I was his first Reserve Officer package. I have passed MEPS, scored a 126 on the ASVAB and passed the board. In doing more research while waiting for September to arrive I have come to the decision that Army is not the way I want to go and I am happy enlisting to get what I had originally been told I would get by the recruiter. The things I am referring to are MOS, bonus, SLRP, and GI Bill. I am very interested in pursuing the Air Force Reserves and only wish I had gone active duty right out of high school.

I am 33 with 3 kids and have a Bachelor's degree in Business and Associate's in Accounting. I was planning on speaking with a recruiter this week because I have been told I can transfer over to another branch without too much headache as I long as I haven't shipped to Basic yet. Can someone tell me the process of what needs to take place so that I have an idea before going to a recruiter's office? Is there a certain form that needs to be done? Will I have to go through the whole MEPS process again? Will I have to get a dependency waiver again (only 1 child lives with me)? How quickly could I get it changed? The Army OCS process took over 3 months and I don't want to get strung along again for months.

Thanks for any help.

Except that you aren't going to basic anymore. My reccomendation, if they are going to comission you, go with them. If you want to transfer later, transfer later but gettting an AF commission would be very difficult and a commissioning application takes a long time-sometimes years.
