LINCOLN, Neb. — An Army National Guard contingent is in France this week for ceremonies honoring World War II sacrifices by Nebraska Guardsmen.

The Nebraska National Guard says a six-member honor guard and three other Guardsmen are in the Normandy region to celebrate the 134th Infantry Regiment. It was part of the 35th Infantry Division, which helped liberate the key city of St. Lo in July 1944, several weeks after the D-Day landings.

Lt. Col. Alfred Thomsen of Omaha, who commanded one of the 134th's battalions, was fatally wounded on July 30, 1944. His sacrifice will be honored Friday at a village on the outskirts of St. Lo.

The regiment has evolved into the 1-134th Reconnaissance and Surveillance Squadron. The honor guard was drawn from it for Normandy ceremonies.
