The National Guard Association of the U.S. has named its new president.

Maj. Gen. Gus L. Hargett, Jr., the adjutant general of Tennessee, was selected for the post. Hargett will retire from the Army at the end of the year to begin leading the NGAUS on Jan. 1, 2010.

As adjutant general for the past seven years, Hargett was responsible for supervising Tennessee’s military department, including the Air Guard and Army Guard.

He began his military career in 1962 with the Tennessee Army National Guard. He was the first National Guard officer to attend the NATO Defense College in Rome, Italy. Hargett also served as chairman of the NGAUS board.
