Marine Corps. changed one of it's ASVAB requirements! Now you need to get a 50 on it instead of a 32 just to get into boot! Really nervous! Any study tips?
Good, if someone can't get at least a 50 on the test than they're better off elsewhere.

Guess you just gotta study a ton. What made them randomly change it from 32 to 50 for no reason? Because the US Marine Corps. was amazing with this change you gotta admit.
You don't need to study for it, you're a freshman in high school. When you get towards the end of your senior year you'll know everything you need to.

I've never known the Corps to effect changes 'Randomly'. Lots of work goes into a Staff Study before major changes.

Well you're right it's not random but what I meant to say was that it was sorta short notice. But yeah CplB's right on the part where I don't need to worry about it yet. The only reason I do worry about is because I'm turn my time in the USMC into a career. I'm not gonna do a 4 year commitment and just leave. It's gonna be a little over 40 years I'm estimating.

The score to enlist is a 31, not 32 or 50. The Marine Corps can stop you from enlisting during a certain period if you don't score over a 50 due to man power. Every service is starting to lift their standard to 50 because they are over their recruiting goals for fiscal 09 right now.

Oh so you have to get a 31? But yeah I heard the Marine Corps. is like 1000 people over the limit. So when they're not over the limit they're gonna switch it back to the low 30's?

goddamn son, thats a long ways away!!!!!! I hope your future pans out as planned. You're gonna be going through a lot of changes in 9 years, you'll change as a person, and possibly have one or multiple life changing experiences. Just forewarning ya. Good luck with it all though.
As far as ASVAB going up to 50, (if thats actually the case) Thats awesome, cause then they wont be recruiting as many dumb people  They're probably just doing that because they're over populated, and don't need as many people, so they up the standards.
No worries though, long as you're decently smart you'll easily get higher than a 50.

Yeah that's what I keep telling myself that in 9 years I'll probably score well over 50 sspecially after college. My plans in the Marines are fairly simple though nothing too special. And you gotta remember that take officers for example, it takes them like 9 years to join also, but they still pull it off? What's the difference between me and the thousands of officers who've joined before me.

So are you going enlisted on commissioned?
Tovarish1
08-10-2009, 09:28 AM
Nah that's really hard to be enlisted on commissioned considering not a lot of enlisted servicemen/women don't get a slot at OCS during enlistment. Obviously it's better to finish your degree then go OCS but I'm just considering officer I don't know yet. I'm probably gonna enlist as 03xx. Maybe go to OCS/TBS if I have the chance (extremely slim chance people have told me if you're already enlisted) but I wanna go to college before enlistment. (If this answers your question because it feels like I didn't add something.)

Tovarish, Every service has a certain amount of people they can let into a certain job at any given time, and different jobs require different asvab scores to get. Also there are different levels Alphas (highest group), bravos, and Cat 4s. So, if your an alpha you'll be able to get almost any job you want, provided theres a space for it. Our grunts are an example of something you only need a 31 for, however if they dont have the spaces for them then there out of luck. The services are only allowed to let in a certain # of Cat 4s and bravos a year. So if they're telling you they need 50 and above its because they've used all there bravo and Cat 4 spaces for that year.
Dont think you can get into the 02 field with under a 50 anyway though, so keep doing your homework and i'm sure you'll be fine when its your time.

CplB might right that it's not my calling. But my guess is that in 8-9 years, things will be fine and the Marine quota will be okay again hopefully.

You know if you go enlisted, you'll have to wait till you're a Sergeant (E-5) before you can go commissioned. And as an 03, becoming a Sergeant can take a good while. A lot of 03's EAS as Lance Corporals. So, you're gonna go all the way through college, THEN enlist, to only go commissioned when the opportunity arises? Honestly, i dont think thats the smartest way to go about it. If you wanna enlist before going commissioned, I'd say join soon as you finish high school, then you can have the Marine Corps pay for your college. Then, by the time you get your degree, you'll probably already be a Cpl, getting ready to pick up Sgt. To me, that would be a better situation to do if you really want to/have to go enlisted before going commissioned.

Well to get promoted to LCpl. I hear isn't that long. To get to Sgt, you have to have been a Cpl. with a TIS of 12 months and be a Cpl. for 8 months right?
NRTrackChamp2004
08-10-2009, 11:50 AM
yeah, its damn easy to pick up Lance Corporal. You'll pick up Lance Corporal in about 9 months if your a contracted PFC, or 13 months if you go in as a Pvt. They practically give it to you long as you dont screw up, not dumb as a box of rocks, and dont get a NJP. And yes, Cpl is between Lance Corporal and Sergeant. TIS doesnt really matter, its TIG. And even still while your able to pick up Cpl after being LCpl for 9 months, its based off of a cutting score. And being an 03, their cutting scores are pretty high, so it takes a lot longer for 03's to pick up versus other MOS's.

AS SOON as you go to boot you get promoted to PFC if you have a college degree correct?
NRTrackChamp2004
08-10-2009, 12:14 PM
no, not AS SOON as you go to boot camp. When you sign all your paperwork and stuff prior to going to MEPS and boot camp, you'll be a "contract" PFC. And you dont get it because of your degree. You only need 15 college credits, which is like only one semester of college. I came in as a contract PFC because I had done only 1 semester of college and had exactly 15 credits. You can also be a contract PFC by doing 2 or more semesters of JROTC.

no doubt, but from what I've gathered from your previous posts, I think you might actually wanna focus high school and what you have at hand, versus, your "potential" future. Its always nice to think and dream big, but, really focus on whats in front of you right now, so all your possibilities are open.
