Concur. Right now you should simply be focusing on what you need to do in DEP to prepare for recruit training.

Hey now, he just asked a question thats all. I'm sure he IS preparing for recruit training. Nothing wrong with a little more extra knowledge on the side.

Quite true. However, in the quest for that extra knowledge you can easily get distracted from the task at hand.

I don't mean to sound dumb or date myself, but you get assigned things to do while you're in DEP? When did they start doing that? During my month of delayed entry (November 1981) I hitch hiked across the country to visit some friends. I didn't even talk to my recruiter during that time.

Forcedj ~ they do have meetings, outings, etc. I think (my opinion) they do it to keep an eye on the recruitees and to get them in shape. Many have much longer than a month from the time they sign up to the time they actually get on the bus. In 2004, when my son enlisted, he attended DEP meetings on a, I think, weekly basis.

oh believe me i am getting prepared, acctually me and another recruit are goin to brooks AF base in the morning, and i go about every other day to the gym so i am being proactive, dont worry about it lol
i swore in the same day Obama swore in for president and i still have to wait until nov. 9th so yup a lil longet than a month lol
also we have meetings once a month at least, mega DEP meetings once a quarter(three regions around the san antonio come here and we all compete against each other in NAVY knoledge, athletics, drill, and so on...) they are trimming up the DEP pool so they do random drug test, if we are not working out and not showing inprovment they wont let us ship
my only problem is im haveing a hard time getting my run time down i know i just have to keep running but er its getting annoying

Speed work, speed work, speed work! I've been a distance runner since long before I entered the Navy. I presume you're running workouts consist of long distance jogs/runs at least a couple timese per week. Am I right? At least once per week you ought to head over to the track and do a workout of 6-10 400m/440yd reps. Whatever time you're doing the 1.5 mile in now, divide that by 6 to figure out your avg 400m/440yd time. Make that time your targer time for the reps you do in your workout. Between each rep give yourself a 1 or 2 minute recovery (continue moving...very slow jogging) during the recovery. Begin the workout with some good stretching and a mile jog or so. End it with a jog of about the same distance.

Dan -
I've seen enough references to DEP meetings, etc., both here and on military.com that I guess they have certain things to learn, etc. to get ready. I don't know first hand as when I was sworn in on 28 April 1978 I was on a plane for San Diego a couple of hours later.
staug347, if you're having issues with the run I would recommend you do a search for sites that have to do with running, such as Runner's World. A lot of them have programs that are geared towards preparing for road races, and some can be adapted to the 1.5 mile Physical Readiness Test run.
At least now I understand they allow you to wear decent running shoes in recruit training. When I had to do it in RTC all we had were deck shoes. Not exactly the best thing in the world for this evolution.

I agree completely..all i'm saying is I don't think it's too bad asking about what uniform he will be issued. I mean it will be one of the uniforms he will be wearing for as long as his term progresses. Who knows...he may be wearing it for quite some time.
I do agree with you though, completing bootcamp in itself should be the main focus.

Good for you, Staug. Wait and see how the Navy life fits you, then make a decision. Very wise.

Nothing wrong with completing your contractual obligations, it is quite honorable.
You say that like the military is the only way to work on that pension.

staug347 i thought i was gonna get out in 4 years its six years later now. yes they swtiched over to the digital cammies so yes you will never have to wear utilities. whats the rate your going in for? and remember these two rules be where your suppose to be when your suppose to be there. and do what your suppose to be doing when your suppose to be doing it and the rest is easy.

Yes they started issuing them at boot camp awhile back. A schoolers here been whering them for awhile now. Focus on the ranks and general orders, both of those will help you greatly in boot camp.
