The Army National Guard on Aug. 13 named its 2009 Soldier and Noncommissioned Officer of the Year at the 38th annual conference of the Enlisted Association of the National Guard of the United States.

Spc. Guy Mellor, of Utah’s B Company, 1st Battalion, 145th Field Artillery Regiment, was named Soldier of the Year.

Sgt. Ryan Brubaker, of Montana’s B Company, 1st Battalion, 163rd Infantry Regiment, is the NCO of the Year.

This is the second straight year a Montana soldier has been named the Army Guard’s NCO of the Year. Last year, after winning the Army Guard competition, Staff Sgt. Michael Noyce Merino went on to win the Army competition.

The Army Guard’s Soldier and NCO of the Year competition took place at Fort Benning, Ga., in early August. The three-day event pushed competitors with ruck marches, written tests, marksmanship events and other tasks, all conducted back-to-back with few breaks in between. Competitors averaged three hours of sleep each night of the competition.

Mellor and Brubaker will represent the Army Guard in the Army competition Sept. 29 at Fort Lee, Va.
