Ok well Im thinking about joining the navy as a IT guy to some capacity sense I delt with IT stuff as a civilian. Having said that I have some good questions and some stupid ones...

On a ship do you have internet access and can you bring a laptop? *Hey im a nerdy computer guy cut me some slack lol*

I heard once that you get special pay if your on a boat, is that true and is that maybe only for subs? and if so anyone have a idea what that pay is like?

How bad is it to be the new guy on a ship as far as living is concerned I here the living conditions on ships are very.... packed

Why the hell does everyone hate subs so much?

I heard the navy doesnt do credit checks, is this true?

And lastly would a Navy man whoop a Airman in a bar fight? :P

Most ships have broadband and desktops for surfing. Having laptops are command decisions.

There is Sea Pay, Sub Pay and premiums to those if you stay at sea long enough. I was making over $400/month in Sea Pay when I retired.

All of the bubble heads I know love subs.

Yes they do.

My answer would be EXTREMELY prejudiced and would likely result in a cyber-asskicking.:D

...Kinda biased answer here, but go AF. Both Navy and AF have technology but the Navy kinda does things their own way. The only branch that confuses a Captain with a Colonel and has Admirals instead of Generals.

The Navy also shares a bunch of stuff with the Marines, and doesnt have AAFES

Enjoy your cubbie hole, ay ay captain

SuperWoda doesn't know what he or she is talking about. AAFES stand for "Army-Air Force Exchange Services"? So, that kind of means that Air Force share a bunch of stuff with the Army. Yes, we do have something similar, called the NEX (Navy Exchange). The Chair Force might be great, but I believe every branch of service has its pros and cons.

'Scuze me but the Navy had Captains, Adminals and Lieutenants before the Air Force even existed. And, the Navy does have AAFES. We call it the Navy Exchange (NEX)...which also existed before AAFES. So HA!

Regarding taking a laptop on a ship...You're probably allowed to take it with you, but chances are you probably wouldn't be allowed to connect it to the ship's LAN.

Oh, there's no chance. No non-DOD computer can be connected (legally) to the network. He doesn't really need it, since he'll have email and web surfing available (usually). The MWR might actually have some gaming computers available, but they won't be online, possibly networked together.

Well, even if he did illegally plug into the network, he wouldn't be able to get service.

Are the ships tied into NMCI now?

At any rate...he is allowed to have the computer with him onboard...isn't he? Or is that not allowed now either?

Most ships i have been on were connected to at least a T1 when in port, and had internet hours underway. DONT think though that it gives you good speed for gaming or downloading.
Also, anything hooked up by law becomes the navies property.. Just remember that.
As for laptops, when i was on the Frank cable from 05-07, we had many who brought their laptops on, and used their own money to make a gaming lan...

As the new guy you will either get a top rack or a bottom one. There are benefits and hinderances to both.

Yeah, but CTO merged into IT, making it a job requiring a top secret clearence. If you don't have good credit, you can forget about IT.
