OCEANSIDE, Calif. — Command of the Marine Corps’ West Coast recruiting and recruit training missions is changing hands on Friday.

Brig. Gen. Angela “Angie” Salinas will hand over the reins of the Western Recruiting Region and Marine Corps Recruit Depot-San Diego to Brig. Gen. Ronald L. Bailey during a late-afternoon ceremony outside Pendleton Hall at the historic depot in San Diego.

“I leave San Diego with a heavy heart,” Salinas said in a press release. “This is a great community.”

During her three years in command, Salinas has overseen the recruitment and initial recruit training of more than 60,000 new Marines. As the top commander, she also has served as the unofficial “Marine mayor” in San Diego, where the depot has opened its doors for numerous concerts and parades, the near-weekly recruit graduation exercises and has also supported local events including the Boot Camp Challenge and the annual Rock and Roll Marathon.

Bailey arrived in San Diego after a tour as deputy commander of III Marine Expeditionary Force and as commander of 3rd Marine Expeditionary Brigade, both based in Okinawa, Japan.

Salinas, whose Marine Corps career began as an enlisted legal services clerk in 1974, now heads to the East Coast, where she will serve as director of the Corps’ Manpower Management Division at Quantico, Va.
