FARMINGTON, Maine — A hearing on a proposal to allow fighter pilots from Vermont and elsewhere to fly as low as 500 feet over western Maine has been canceled.
A session was originally scheduled for Wednesday at the University of Maine in Farmington. The Air National Guard says it will be rescheduled in response to comments from the public.
The hearing was to focus on an environmental impact statement for the training flights, which are expected to include pilots from Vermont and Massachusetts Air National Guard units as well as others.
Under the proposal, National Guard F-16s would be allowed to fly as low as 500 feet over the hills and mountains of western Maine and part of New Hampshire.
Critics have questioned the need for the ground-hugging flights.
