I'm a proud mom of a potential recruit who scored well on ASVAB...he has misdemeanor from 5 years ago when under 21 and Army not currently utilizing "waivers" that might allow him in-we're getting the record "expunged", but that may take a while, so we're waiting, but in meantime, is there any word on if/when the waivers might be put back into effect? He's/we've been told that if they are he'd be allowed to enter right away. Thank you, and thanks to all for their service!

Don't bother to get the record expunged. If you do, when he applies for a waiver you are just going to have to go back and get it unexpunged. They are doing waivers. they are probably just puttin gyou off until the new FY.

Ringjamesa-what do you mean we'd have to have it unexpunged-and why? can you please offer more information-also-why would he tell us waivers have been suspended-he really seemed interested in my son-are you sure waivers are in effect, and does it vary state to state, or branch to branch-are you referring to army specifically?? thank you

The reason you have to have it "unexpunged" is that he still will have a conviction-expunged or not. In order to do the waiver, they need the records. In order to get the records on a case that has been expunged, the guilty party must petition the judge that sealed/expunged the records to get them unseale/unexpunged. Waivers are never suspended. Every item that requres a waiver is subject to approval/diapproval. Some Recruiting supervisors just don't like waivers. The fact of the matter is a year ago, the waiver would have been done and your son would be in. This year is a whole new game. Everyone is rolling the #s they need to roll so getting a waiver is harder. 1 Oct, all the #s reset and each recruiting service starts at zero all over again. Everyone wants to have the best start they can so his chances might be better 1 Oct than they would be in Sept. It may vary from state to state if he is applying to the Guard. It definately varies from branch to branch and component to component.

I appreciate your info, and candor. He hasn't been successful yet with Army, but is going to check now with Marines and Navy. He simply wants to serve. Thank you.

What is his misdemeanor for, and how many charges does he have on his record? That has a lot to do with the waiver process. From what your original question was, it sounded as if there was only one misdemeanor, and there are only a few charges where one misdemeanor will require a waiver.

Thank you.......it was a paraphenalia/simple posession offense-a ticket was issued-we have signed affidavits from officials in the county he now resides in stating he has since had no offenses-this kid has always wanted to serve, and still has not given up-he made a stupid mistake, and unfortunately is learning it may follow him the rest of his life and prevent him from doing what he really wants to do. Believe me, i do not in any way condone what he did, I just think it's a shame it's still getting in his way. He's totally turned his life around, cleaned up his act, proven to be responsible, and loyal, has a strong work ethic-scored in the 60's for his asvab........all qualities I would hope may all work in his favor, but with folks joining up now just to have a job.........makes it tough

I am not sure where you are getting your information, but it is most certainly WRONG.
1. If they get the record expunged they will not have to get it "unexpunged"(never even heard of this) they will simply have to annotate it and the circumstances surronding it, also state that it was expunged and show the paper work from that.
2. Waivers get suspended all the time, things change very frequently. Especially with recruiting being so good right now. So please, don't post information unless you know what you are talking about.
