I joined the Navy Reserves back In February and it is not for me. I am prior service having done active duty Army for 4 years and Army National Guard Mountain Infantry for 7 the Navy is just to foriegn an enity for me.

So question is can I switch from Navy Reserves to Air National Guard? I have been paid a $7,500 bonus and I know I will have to repay that to the Navy but can I get a bonus in the Air Guard that will off set the Navy bonus repayment. When i repay the Navy bonus do I have to pay the taxes back too?

I am looking to transfer to an aircraft crew cheif on a refueling plane so am not sure if there are bonuses for that career field.

The Navy is a foreign entity to you but you think the Air Force will be like the Army? Yes you can switch but the Navy has to agree to release you. You will have to pay back the unearned portion of your bonus. You may be eligible for a bonus from the Guard but in these economic times, remember that Guard $ is tied to the state so if the state has no $, you get no bonus and you get none of the state funding for school. I will bet you money that when you talk to the recruiter the most spoken words he/she says is "up to..." That is because you can lose any of the non federal $ promised to you if the state can't afford to give it to you...

I am under no illusion that the Air Force is like the Army but at least they have very similar names for rank as the Army and most people in the AF know what a ruck sack is. Hell I can't figure out a butter bar from a LT. COL in the Navy. I will also be working on a real world mission in the Air Gaurd. I have been looking at the Army but there aren't any combat arm units close to my house and I don't want to drive a truck.

My biggest problem with the Navy is the total lack of anything to do. I literally sit around all weekend. There is also a huge lack of additional training opportunities. I am not dumping on the Navy reserves it is just the way the system is set up. Their reserve centers are not set up to do training that is related to your job if your job is ship oriented. I have a good group of guys in my section who are pretty squared away and they too would like a mission each weekend other than studing for a test. They are Navy guys so they would never switch and I can tell they don't "get me" when I start throwing out the hoorahs. :)

It's actually a "National Guard" thing vs "Reserves" thing. There's typically more to do in the National Guard, because each unit within the National Guard is specialized. At one ARNG amory, it might be a company from a signal battalion, or for the ANG, an Airman might be attached to a particular airlift squadron.

For the reserves, however... it tends to be a reserve center, with people from every MOS/AFSC/NEC all thrown into one building, where the "real" training is conducted during the two weeks every year.

You obviously have no idea what you are talking about. Show me ONE Air Force Reserve Unit that does that....ONE....... You can't do it. AFR units are located at a Reserve Base, Guard Base, Naval Air Station, ADAF base...etc not at a "Reserve Center." When you go to work in your particular AFSC, you go to the location on base that houses the equipment etc-medical go to the clinic, CE go to the CE compound, LRS goes to their compound, SFS go to the Cop shop....There is not one single AFR unit ANYWHERE that just goes to a Reserve Center Building and hangs around. You are thinking of the Army and FYI, the Army NG does the same thing at their Armory as the Army Reserve does at thier Reserve Center.
In fact, I would venture to guess, you are more likely to be "thrown into one building" at one of the 26 ANG units that are located at an Airport instead of a base at all but even that isn't that likely...
