There has been a ton of discussion about the PT program requirements, and how commanders choose to run their unit PT programs. Personally, I believe that unit PT sessions should only ever be used as a morale-builder and not as an actual workout (because for 98% of us, they are NOT a workout!).
But all of this PT discussion is a moot point if the diet and nutrition aspect of fitness isn't being preached as well! Unfortunately, the only time your diet and eating habits are brought up is if you've been mandated to go to the HAWC for a healthy living class! And by that time, you've practically got one foot out the door!
I see these Airmen, who are currently stick-thin and can run a 9-minute mile and a half and plop down with a Whopper and large fry for lunch with no problem now.... but what happens in a few years, when they no longer can maintain that lifestyle? When that Whopper gut starts to rear its ugly head? By that time, their eating habits are already established and set in stone!
Why aren't we being PRO-active with diet/nutrition AND PT, versus RE-active? Why is it that commanders preach "individual responsibility" with PT, but turn their head when the Mickey D's bags roll in for lunch?? It order to truly be "fit to fight," we have to tackle the problem from BOTH areas: PT and Diet and Nutrition!
