I just want to say that I appreciate any help or advice you can give me with my dilemma.

Well, I'm 19 years and did pretty well throughout school. I managed to get a 2.9 GPA, so you can say I was pretty much your typical student who did "fairly well". Now to better myself and move on I chose to join the AF. When I went to take my asvab I scored pretty low and it wasn't because I had a hard time, its mostly because I went in with the attitude "John Doe passed it so it must be a piece of cake". I didn't study or take it seriously even though I have been out of school for a little over a year. To make a long story short, I ended up scoring a 46-- pretty embarrasing, right? Yeah, I know..and I need to move on now because my time is running out where I live (personal matters). I take my physical in 2 weeks.

Now, If anybody can give me advice on any of these job fields I would really appreciate it. With the score I placed and due to my low score on mechanics, there isn't much I find to interesting. I was told by my father to avoid SF because he a close friend of his hates the job. He gave me insight on what type of work they do, typical day, etc, etc.

I really am going in with an open-mind for my first term and just hoping for the best. Maybe I can cross-train or re-enlist into something else after?

Well with that said, here are the jobs that I am eligible and somewhat thinking of doing.

Supply management, diet therapy, services, maintenance scheduling, and pharmacy.

ANY insight, pros and cons, typical day (work schedule), personal thoughts, I would appreciate. Please don't criticize or try to belittle me, I really do need insightful information because my time to decide is coming up really soon. Also, what is with guaranteed/not guaranteed jobs? I hear alot of talk around that subject, so can you please confirm. Do you still go to basic? Or do you wait to get the job first.

Thanks!

You can always retake the ASVAB. I think they allow you to take it again in six months or a year. I don't remember if there is a limit on how many times you can take it.

The ASVAB isn't the only factor in jobs. I scored high enough for the jobs I wanted to do and then found out because I didn't have normal color vision I was only allowed to come in as open admin. Then after I came in a was placed in a job that wasn't even on my list of choices.

I think if you had a guaranteed job you would get the career field you want, but if it isn't guaranteed they can place you where they need you.

With services I mostly think of the people who either work in the gym or the people that prepare food. There are probably other areas to work within a career field.

You will go to basic training and then they send you to a tech school to learn your job. The harder jobs have longer schools. You still have to pass the school to get the job. If you don't they send you to a different job.

I think that the happiest people I see, or at least the ones who don't show as much stress are the ones who work in the hospital or dental squadrons. They usually have clean facilities with HVAC and get training days and holidays and weekends off. Many other jobs can have you working any days or hours.

It's good you are asking questions. I've been in almost 13 years and love the big picture. It is when you look at the Air Force on a smaller scale of what is directly in front of you that people don't like it. Your experience during your first couple years will probably determine whether you stay in for the long hall. Good luck!

It depends on what interests you. You should be able to goolge "USAF AFSC XXXX" with the various duty titles and get get descriptions of each on. An yes, you can USUALLYcross train unless you are in a very low-manned career field (SF, for example).

Go pharmacy so that way you can cut Motrin with the good stuff when you dispense it!
