After nearly a year in the works, the high-performance version of the Navy physical training uniform will hit some exchanges Nov. 27 — Black Friday, to shoppers.

The Navy also announced that, in addition to the higher quality “gender neutral” physical training gear, a “female-specific” version will go on sale. The clothing, made by New Balance, is designed to be more breathable.

The shirt and shorts will be $24.99 each — making a complete outfit just under $50. The 2010 price for the regular uniform is $13.50 for a shirt and $18.50 for a pair of shorts. Sailors must have two sets of shirts and shorts.

The high-performance clothes are considered optional uniform items. If purchased, they replace a sailor’s standard-issue gear.

Where to get it
Officials said the high-performance uniform would be available Nov. 27 in exchanges in:

• Norfolk, Oceana and Little Creek, Va.

• San Diego, Coronado and Port Hueneme, Calif.

• Bethesda, Md.

• Bangor, Bremerton, and Whidbey Island, Wash.

• Jacksonville and Mayport, Fla.

• Great Lakes, Ill.

• Pearl Harbor, Hawaii.

• Kings Bay, Ga.

• New London, Conn.

• Charleston, S.C.

• Newport, R.I.

• Bahrain.

• Signonella, Italy.

• Yokosuka and Sasebo, Japan.

• Guam.

NORFOLK, Va. — Less than two weeks after going on sale, the Navy exchange has taken the new, high-performance physical training shorts off the shelf and offering full refunds due to a manufacturing problem.

The high-performance shirt is unaffected by the problem and remains on sale.

“The ‘Navy’ logo on the short is peeling off after being laundered,” said Kristine Sturkie, spokeswoman for the Navy Exchange Command in Virginia Beach. “Subsequently, the Navy Exchange has ceased the sale of the short and is making full refunds for returned shorts.”

The manufacture of the shorts, New Balance, is correcting the production process that created the problem, she said, and plans to have a revised short available in about eight weeks.

Sailors can return their shorts to any Navy Exchange. Those who purchased them online or over the phone can either return the shorts to their nearest Navy Exchange or call 800-368-4088 to arrange for a return.

If you have Facebook and get onto MCPON's list, you'll see lots of discussion about this and the general dislikes of the PTU.

After one or two PT sessions and washings, the logo comes off of the standard PT gear too - not by "peeling"; sort of gets scrubbed off and washed off.

I'm not worried about that. My biggest gripe about PT gear is the price. Honestly, I think the Air Force had it right - take the Army's PT gear, make it a different color, and slap the AF logo on it. Why couldn't we have done that?

Trust me... You do not want AF PT gear. It sucks. The pants are the worst. I refer to mine as my MC Hammer pants. The shirts aren't great either. The short don't fit anyone the right way. All in all the AF pt uniform is a fail.

Yeah. The entire AF PT program is a fail, not just the uniforms.
