What is the difference between the 5.56 NATO and .223?

I know the 5.56 NATO round has higher pressure than a .223, but is one louder than the other?

Can the 5.56 military round be louder than a .223 or is the .223 louder?

What are the standard powder loadings for the military 5.56 NATO and the civilian .223?

Has anyone here in the military fired both types of rounds?

5.56 mm is .223 caliber. They are essentially identical with a miniscule amount of difference in powder. Here is a link that will give you more information than you probably want: http://www.thegunzone.com/556faq.html

odd, I remember almost this exact question being asked somewhere else on this website...

Anyway, 5.56 and .223 are the exact same round except for maybe a few minor differences

Just like the AR-15 and the M16/M4 are extremely similiar

The difference is about as profound as the difference between .45 ACP and .45 HP (1mm on the case). Basically, its a way around ammunition restrictions.
