I know a whole lot of people in SC that are pissed off right about now with this. They were basically boasting for the last 3 years I was there it was getting the F-35 for both McEntire and Shaw, even put the $$$ into getting the simulator there and everything. All for naught at this point. Personally, Shaw didn't need them considering they have the newest of new Vipers (even the last one to roll off the line for the US) and places like Luke were pretty much dismantled. However, isn't Luke the training base for them and not an operational base?? So its really just Hill since Eglin is not technically ACC either. They were dropped last year once they lost the Eagles.
yeash when i was at shaw thats all we heard about was the F_35
big ownage
I Support DADT, Keep it as it is..
Shaw has tremendous morale issues in Mx. Sumter isn't exactly the premier location of the Carolina's either. I believe that this was a major factor in the decision. If you look at the bases chosen for the F-22 & 35. They will all have a significant turnover in Mx personnel. Hill, Tyndall, Holloman and Eglin will have almost a 70% turnover in Mx personnel with average TOS under 2yrs. Climate and culture is significant during the bed down of a new weapons system. 33FW at Eglin is a perfect example. They were a prima donna, like a faded Hollywood star living on past glory. No way they could place new aircraft in that environment. Shaw has block 50 Vipers so they were not even a serious contender. The AF made the right call!
And when Shaw, Mcintyre, and a slew of other F-16 bases' (especially ANG) aircraft finally reach the end of their service lives the AF will have two choices, buy new F-16s (not going to happen) or get the F-35 (not going to happen). Hate to say it, but not too far in the future our AF will be a lot smaller than it is now...
Disagree. Working a crappy job in a beautiful or fun location can at least make it bearable. Working a crappy job in a crappy location just makes it even worse. Especially when your family hates the location, too. You might be able to improve the at-work aspect of your people, but a crap location is a crap location.
