Post Navy doc goes from magazine cutie to TV’s latest ‘Bachelor’

Navy Lt. Andy Baldwin is the latest serviceman to enter the entertainment limelight. Lt. Baldwin is the newest reality star appearing on "The Bachelor." From the article --

Baldwin, 30. has gone from Pearl Harbor to the Persian Gulf, from mountain villages in Laos to a “50 hottest bachelors” spread in Cosmopolitan. And now he’s the next “The Bachelor” on ABC.

“I had no idea how difficult (it is),” Baldwin says. “I’ve done the Iron Man six times, but this is hard.”

He has every reason to be confident. Baldwin is an impossibly handsome guy with a classic physique. In high school, he was an All-American swimmer. Now he’s a doctor and a Navy lieutenant, caring for divers in Pearl Harbor.

One assumes he could attract a woman without the help of a reality show. Still, Baldwin says this is logical. “There are people falling in love in stranger ways.”

He accepted a Navy offer that sent him to medical school. Now he’s finishing a hitch at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii with plans for another.

The hot-bachelor list in Cosmo may have led to the “Bachelor” push. Baldwin got approval from his commanding officer then agreed to do the show.

I think it is ridiculous. If what someone is doing in this type of setting is going to benefit them to be a better member of the military then great, or if it is going to make them better at their job then do it. However what benefit is this to the military. I would imagine that there is someone who has to cover his work load, some doctor is on call more, maybe a civilian doctor was hired in a temp status to pik up the slack. Maybe someone has to deploy in his place all the while this guy is getting paid a military salary. For what so he can find a wife.
Where do you draw the line, if some private wins a contest to be on some dumb reality MTV show do we not let him go but if some pvt can sing and gets picked up by American Idol they can go.

Think about it this way right now there is some active /reserve doctor in Iraq/A-stan living a pretty tough life and helping to save lives. He is making the same pay as the bachelor dude and has the same skill set needed in a war. What if some private company comes to me and says he we need your skill set for 2 months we will pay you 75k and then you can go back to the military. This money would provide me with a nice benefit, which is the same thing that this doctor is getting (an additional benefir that has nothing to do with his career). Do you think that DA would let me go? Do you think they should?

The military is a unique profession by joining you agree to give up certain privelages. Not to mention the Navy paid to train him in his current profession. Do you think the bachelor would want him if he was a mechanic, but had the same looks?

I believe in one part of the show Lt. Baldwin states that he had to use almost all of his available leave to do the filming and such. So, just because he's on the show doesn't mean the Navy necessarily had to hire someone to do his duties...the Navy carries on the same way it would regardless of what he is doing while he happens to be on leave. When other personnel go on leave does their branch hire others to take their place? No, they don't. The mission continues on the same way. Did the Lt. get special consideration for his leave because of what he was doing? Probably. And you also have to remember he's a great source of PR for the military as well. The Navy is getting some pretty positive feedback from the civilian world because of this. In the eyes of the Navy it's a 'you scratch my back, I'll scratch yours' kind of situation.

I think you are jealous because you dont have the bachelor's look and privelege. The man is on leave, so dont hate. Trust me, the Navy will get their's back from him. He will be right back to work. Like the second post says, the mission goes on without him being there. I understand that there are many people working in hostile areas right now, and I greatly appreciate that. At the same time, that does not mean everbody else's life should stop for that reason. The bachelor is hot, and I love seeing him on tv.

I believe the Navy should court martial this Officer. He is promoting drinking and partying with many women, something the Navy should not be promoting with all of the allegations of sexual assualts and in
some cases female sailors lying using the word rape to cover there wrongs and to get immmunity. He is not a Officer and a Gentleman if he is kssing as many women as he can hanging all over them like amonkey in heat!!. There is no difference in what he is doing right now, then the navy tossing out sailors right and left for adultery and homosexuality. Is behavior according to Gen. Pace is considered immoral. Toss him out!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

The Navy is not supporting this in anyway, shape or form. There is no law preventing a service member on leave from partisipating in a television show (nobody says anything about Wheel of Fortune and all the other game shows service members appear on in uniform).
Senior Navy leadership looked for reasons to keep him off the show and couldn't find one, so don't blame the Navy. As for kissing a bunch of different girls and acting the fool, he is not married and he's of drinking age. There's no law against it. If it truely offends you, Change The Channel!

you are wrong look at the UCMJ. You are promoting the military 24/7. soliders and sailors are under the ucmj at all times. Just because he is using is own leave time does not mean the military can not charge him
with a violation under the UCMJ art 134. Article 134 leads it open to the Commanding Officer to charge any offense as to Prejudice to good order and discipline. Also his behavior could be charged under that article
promoting Prejudice to good order and discipline. Look the military can not say it is fair to charge someone being gay or commiting adultery and then say it is all fair to be single and do anything you damn well please because you are single. That in it self is saying the military is completely bias to all gays and married military personal. Look he is suppose to be a Officer and a gentleman. Feeling up these girls and kissing them like a dog in heat is not being a Officer and a gentleman and it offends me weather I watch the show or not!
\So I do blame the Navy and To Navy Officials. Because under the UCMJ he is a Active Duty Personal
and falls under the UCMJ! ADM Mullen is full of himself if he says he can not discipline this Officer for
promoting promiscuity and then punish someone for that same thing if they were enlisted.
Oh wait the young Naval Officers at the Academy that were just investigated for offensive behavior on that
mexican cruise just got brushed off as immaure behavior. It's a hoot when a Officer miss behave's they get ttold it is just being immature. When a young enlisted kid gets caught doing the same thing they get tossed out of the Military with a BCD. I see what you are saying!!! The military has a doubled standard when it come to the Officer's it is called SPECIAL TREATMENT!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I think to be on a love show it is kinda silly. However, I am in full support of letting people do American Idol like Josh Gracin, and Phil Stacey. Shows we can have talent as well... and it puts what we do in the spotlight.

From Wiki "Phil Stacey was born in Harlan County, Kentucky.[1] His mother, Adrell Horn, was born in Madison County, Kentucky and works as a nurse in Smyrna, Tennessee.[2] His father, Gary Stacey, is a Church of God (Cleveland) minister who pastors a church. Stacey's maternal grandfather, Carlie Horn, was also a Church of God pastor.[1] Stacey grew up in Fairfield, Ohio and began singing in church.[1]

He serves as a member of the band in the United States Navy.
Phil graduated from Northwest High School in Wichita, Kansas in 1997. He attended Lee University[3][4] in Cleveland, Tennessee. He holds a degree in vocal performance from Lee, where he was a member of the exclusive choir, Lee Singers, and its even more exclusive touring group, Second Edition. In addition to his vocal prowess, he is memorable for missing the birth of his daughter, McKayla, to audition for Idol. He also has one other daughter, Chloe. WXKB in Fort Myers has recently started playing his version of Every Breath You Take. On the April 11th, 2007 American Idol episode, Stacey escaped elimination after being voted in the bottom three. Stacey has been in the bottom three 4 times and also for 3 consecutive weeks, almost tying the record with Season One performer Nikki McKibbin and Season Four performer Anthony Fedorov. However, during the Top 7 performances week, Phil avoided the bottom three."

Has anyone seen this show? Is it not a good thing that two of the most popular shows on TV are promoting the military personel as being able to have a life, to be more than they can be? Have you seen Phil sing? Awesome.
