Post Incendiary Petraeus ad has GOP seeing red

A newspaper ad that refers to the senior U.S. commander in Iraq as “General Betray Us” has drawn fire from at least two prominent Republican lawmakers who want Democratic leaders in Congress to denounce what they are calling a slap at all service members.

MoveOn.Org, a left-leaning, nonprofit political action group, placed a full-page advertisement in Monday’s edition of The New York Times that asks rhetorically asks if Army Gen. David Petraeus should be called “General Betray Us.” The ad says the commander of Multi-National Force-Iraq has failed to acknowledge that Iraq is mired in an “unwinnable religious war.”

Rep. Duncan Hunter of California, senior Republican on the House Armed Services Committee and a presidential candidate, called the ad a “slap in the face of every member of the armed forces.”

“General Petraeus is an American soldier. His professional life is a reflection of adherence to duty, honor and country,” Hunter said.

“The Senate had absolute confidence in General Petraeus when it unanimously confirmed him earlier this year. Because of organizations like MoveOn.org and its affiliations with the leftist, liberal wing of the Democratic Party, the question arises whether this ad represents the stance of all Democrats,” Kyl said in a statement. “If not, it is time for the Democratic leadership to announce whether it stands with MoveOn.org or whether it stands behind the general Democrats unanimously confirmed — and his military strategy — to carry out our mission in Iraq.

Being the anti-Bush and anti-war that I am I would tend to keep my distance from the MoveOn.Org suggestion of calling the general by that name. I would wait that fact to be proven and then call him anything I want.
This only comes to prove the point that this administration has consistently dismissed military commanders for having had the guts to disagree with them, hence the suspicion that General Petreaus would be more amenable to support the administration's position by catering to its policy in Iraq. I do not believe this is so and, as I said, I would wait for the facts to be public in order to render an opinion about the General.

There was a time when doubting or critizicing the administration about this war was considered un-american, un-patriotic, treasonous, cut and run or cowards, all of those names being directed of course towards democrats who knew then what we know now, that president Bush lied to us in order to get us into a war for his own personal motives. I don't recall hearing many republicans being alarmed by the fact that Bush himself talked about the democrats being the "cut and run Party", in other words: cowards.
So it should come as no surprise that a left wing organization makes this kind of remarks about General Petreaus, and the indignation of the republicans comes a little late and sounds disingenious to say the least.

General Petreaus is an honest and honorable soldier until he proves otherwise. I only wish we could say the same thing about president Bush and his cohorts in the White House, past and present.

Wow, what a fine comment on the American political scene - childish name calling at the level of 6 year olds.

The "appropriate" response is for their Mommies to spank them and not let them watch TV for a week.

I disagree, that would constitute cruel and unusual punishment. This is not Guantanamo.

As a Republican, I don't know. All I hear is that he's honorable and smart and great, but if you saw his testimony before congress, he obviously doesn't should like we're winning. So, has he given in to administration pressures? I'm not impressed with him so far. Perhaps such an ad by the lefty nutjobs will show his true colors. WIll he come through and meet the hype?, or was he part of the Bush hype all along?

Do you really think that one man is responsible for everything that goes on in Iraq? He's simply the man that accepts responsability for what goes on. Does he make policy? No he simply enforces policy. Does he follow Bush's orders? As does everyone in the military. General betray-us? I don't think so. The man carries four stars on his shoulder, and as i counted them 34 ribbons and medals on his chest. the idiot who made that statement should be drawn and quartered at the least. Move on should be ashamed and conduct an investigation into just who posted this idiotic statement. This lifetime Democrat who served 23 years in the Army is. General please accept my apology for the ignorance of some of my fellow Democrats.

After listening to the hearings I can see that nothing has changed. Small examples of "success" were displayed and talked about, but in reality the policy will remain the same: the way ahead, stay the course, etc. etc. The general did what the administration expected of him and when he says that his report didn't clear with the White House he is obviously referring to the fact that once he wrote it he didn't submit pro approval to the president. But what went into it was cleared a long time ago and during the months of waiting for the "September report" to be delivered to Congress.

To say that the general, without being the "betray-us" of the MoveOn article, didn't cater to the administration's policies is like saying that the CIA was not coerced by the unprecedented and repeated visits by vice-president Cheney on the way to Bush's war.

The tedious litany of the leftist losers has degenerated to this: we'll repeat that Bush lied often enough, and soon the weak-minded will wonder what it's all about. I've even seen a bumper stickers to the effect that 'Bush lied, men died', or 'When Clinton lied, nobody died'. Why don't you wipe away the froth and list the lies? Repetition, insinuation, and name-calling only move morons.

If by now you really don't know what lies Bush told, I wonder who the moron is.
