The Navy has said it doesnt plan on sending ships to intercept the Sirius Star, the Saudi supertanker carrying $100 million in crude oil that was seized off the coast of Kenya and as of Tuesday was anchored at a port in Somalia.
Meanwhile, The Associated Press is reporting that yet another cargo ship, a 26,000-ton bulk cargo carrier, was attacked and taken over by pirates on Tuesday in the Gulf of Aden. What do you think the U.S. Navy and other coalition ships should be doing about the problem? Are their hands tied or should they be doing more? |

I think if we are so high in mighty with sea power then we should show our force otherwise sit back and watch like all the other cowards.

Our tactics need to change for these situations. Which I have seen strides in newer ship designs. It's our piracy tactics that need to be thought out. Right now our Navy is the heavy weight champion when talking about head to head sea battles or precision land attacts or aerial assaults. But those little boats without any high tech equipment or armament just seem to mistify our surveillance. Escorts for all large ships is one choice. Designated sea lanes is another good choice. A narrow lane that can be guarded easier and response time could be minimized. The Saudi tanker could have stayed in one of these lanes or was it taken off sea lanes to prod a reaction from the Naval community.

Take the tanker and make it ours, bring it here and use the oil for us. What ever country has the guts to go there and take the tanker from the pirates should also have the oil as the reward.

I think we should have a honeypot ship out there. A nice, big attractive target ship... Filled with US Marines. Let the pirates board the boat... And then kill them all... Except for a few. Use those few for information gathering on other pirates. If we do this a few times, attacks may subside.

Determine what price the Saudi's are willing to pay for their precious cargo and take it back for the fee.

The US need to show its mighty in this region. One of the main US Navy role is to secure the sea and allow the movement of goods. However the pirates are proofing to be more powerful and they are hijacking cargo ships at will. What i don't get is, are we still haunted by the mention of the word Somali(a)? Let smoke them out!

What are OUR national security interests? That is what the US Navy should be used for.
If the Saudis or any other country have an interest...let them fund a security force...I think Blackwater has some security ships for hire.
