Command Sponsorship?

I am a USMC wife of 17 years. My brother is in the Air Force, joined last summer and has been stationed at Camp Darby in Italy since Oct. 06. He came home and got married last month. Have heard that she has to get command sponsorship to go over there. How does that work? USAF pays for her to go over and her stuff right? I am no help because the USMC does not have this. Any info will be greatly appreciated.

Your brother would need to request command sponsorship through his chain of command. This would entitle his spouse to join him at Camp Darby and entitle them to all benefits of an accompanied tour. If he's on an unaccompanied tour, I believe he would have to extend his tour to an accompanied length.

I recommend your brother review AFI 36-2110, which is the governing reg for assignments, paying particular attention to Appendix 20, which discusses command sponsorship. Once he knows the background, he should go talk to his first sergeant to see what he needs to do to get the ball rolling at his location.

No, the USAF won't pay for her or her stuff to go there. She had to have been on his original orders to Italy to get paid travel.

The command sponsorship will allow her to use the commissary...get a driver's license...use the BX, etc. And it will extend his tour by one year.

I am going through the same thing right now trying to get my new bride command sponsored here in Germany.
