Major kudos to Staff Sgt. Scott Cole for his letter regarding service members becoming “unlocked cars” in terms of identity theft [“Switch to service numbers,” June 30].

We do have our Social Security numbers put on everything, and as a soldier in intelligence and security, I have noticed on several occasions how big a problem this is becoming. I agree 100 percent with Staff Sgt. Cole and see it only as a minor inconvenience to add another number to remember.

It’s better than becoming a victim of identity theft and spending money on fixing an issue that could have been prevented. Half the time, the potential for compromise doesn’t even fall on the individual service member’s shoulders but on others serving them. We have the resolve to win this war on terror, so how about having the smarts and the vigilance to not fail ourselves in common sense personnel security?
