Hello i just had a few questions? i am 24 right now and i was thinking about enlisting in the Navy for a couple reasons. first i want to peruse a career in LE and second i want to go back to school but havent had the money to go back?
I was looking into different Mos in the Navy and i was looking into the security/ LE ? is there anyone on here that can tell me a little more about it and it if is geared towards someone who wants to eventually become a police officer? and what its all about and what some of the duties would be?
And i am still thinking if i want to go full time or reserves and if i do go reserves do they have security mos as a reservist?

I've known of several military security people that have gone into civilian law enforcement. Sorry...I never worked in military security so I can't tell you much more about it. But you would be able to take college classes in law enforcement...working toward a degree...using tuition assistance.

Xavier. The Navy enlisted community term their "jobs" as ratings. MOS is Army (and I believe Marines) terminology for "jobs." The MA (Master-At-Arms) rating is geared very much towards those that want to become a LEO in the civilian sector. However, the 31 Bravo (31B) MOS in the Army may better gear you towards a more successful LEO career. I'm not down playing the Navy community what-so-ever, I was prior Navy after all and very proud of that fact. Though, I am very familiar with the Army community as well.
I suppose it depends on whether or not you mind going to war, to put it bluntly. If you do not mind and understand (and are prepared for the fact), then go Army. You'll be exposed to far more instances where LE instances arise in the Army than you will in the Navy, period. Sure, in the Navy you'll run the drills and become familiar with procedure, but given what the Army does as opposed to what the Navy does (and how they go about doing it), exposure will very likely be far more rounded in the Army. I know many a LEO that were very much prepared for SWAT due to their experience in the Army. Those in the Navy, really weren't, though they did make MPO within a relatively short amount of time, one I've spoken to actually entered their local PD as a MPO upon hiring.
Also, I would not enter any branch with set in stone thoughts of getting out after 4 years. The prospect of being able to retire at 44 (if not earlier), then going into local government as a LEO and retiring from that, thus collecting two pension is a very nice one. You're getting a slightly later start to things, though, better late than never at all. Just, keep an open mind if you can before entering into any branch.. you might just like it, though that will rarely be the case if you're close minded upon entry. Good luck in whatever you decide!

Is a LEO community I frequent often and you'll find many ex-31B, MA and other LEO's from other walks of life. Register, introduce yourself and ask questions - they're very helpful.. slightly over-moderated at times, but helpful never-the-less.

I AM an MA. I'm in the USNR. I enlisted last fall and went to basic in April-May 08, A School in San Antonio in June-July. I actaully have two seperate career paths that I have an interest in and reserched both prior to enlistment. One was becoming a police officer and the other is becomeing an electric lineman. So I researched the MA rating and the CE (Construction Electrician) rating. I first attempted to enlist for the CE program, but they didn't have any A School seats open at the time so I went with my second choice of MA. I am now trying to get a job with the local utility company to become a line apprentice. I still may follow my civilian LE dreams some day. I've heard that MA A school used to be taught by civ LEO's and was obviously very similar to civ LEO training as a result. Now that 9/11 happend though, they've switched to Navy MA's and Blackwater contractors teaching the school. The training isn't much like civ LEO training, but is geared mainly towards anti-terrorism / force protection training. At A School you'll spend alot of time learning and qualifying on the M-9 service pistol, M-16 rifle, M-500 shotgun, and the M-60 machine gun (very fun, I might add.) You'll spend a week working on self defense and take down techniques, baton techniques, and non lethal force. You'll get sprayed with OC and have to complete satisfactorily a course based on the training that week. You'll get first aid, CPR, AED training. PT most days, training schedule permiting. There will be training in vehicle, baggage, and personel inspections. If you pay attention you'll learn to be very thorough in your inspections and the importance of. There is also a bit taught on tactical team movements (SWAT type stuff.) The instructors that I had, at least, seemed to be very good at what they do and very knowledgeable. Just from Basic and A School training I got several college credits accepted at my local community college. There are ways to get funding for college, but I haven't put much research into it at this time. I like the reeserves, but haven't done anything LE related on weekend drills (I'm part of a small NOSC where we don't have the size or resources.) There are some NOSC's that have dedicated MA units, but there aren't enough of us for there to be an official unit. I have yet to go on my first AT, so I don't know what that'll be like. I haven't been called up, and a buddy of mine in the NOSC was there a year before me in the same rate and he hasn't been called up either. As far as I know there is a big demand for reserve MA's. I've seen ad's in Navy Times for reserve MA's. You can do it NPS (Non-Prior Service), no problem. Last I knew they were still giving the $20,000 cash bonus for the NPS Reserve MA's. I got one, got it when my recruiter told me to expect it (I think I got an exceptionally good recruiter - very honest, good guy.) It's the highest cash bonus tier level they have for enlisted reserve NPS. My only complaint about the bonus is they give you the money then, being the indian givers the governement is they'll tax the hell out of it. LOL Oh well, it's a form of income so that's how it works.
Let me know if you have any further questions and I will answer them to the best of my ability.
