Ok, one of my former Marines is now a Sgt and he's unsure of how to handle a situation with one of his Marines. He says this Marine is late around once a month. He's been UA as much as 3 hrs. He's unsure of how to handle this Marine because hes not a bad Marine at all. He comes in early and stays late everyday, but this has happened before. So he's trying to figure out how to punish him.
I'm not exactly sure. I would recommend making him stay late, but he already does that. Extra PT or some kind of report is my only answers before a write up. So any suggestions please let me know.

Break it down to him and tell him that this shit might fly as a Lance, but as an NCO and especially a Sergeant he can't be setting a bad example to the junior Marines. You should also explain that all it takes is a little bad paperwork to make his first fitrep adverse, and then it's career over, byebye, welcome to your terminal rank.
Honestly, with something this stupid you can't put another person's career in your hands. If he is such a moron that he is going to jeapardize everything for 3 hours of UA, to hell with him. That's just me though, I generally think people who are late for work are undisciplined in more areas if you really look.

I had a good to go Marine that I was in charge of that made a few mistakes as well. He was a good Marine and I didn't want to throw the book at him so what I did was made him write me an essay. I found a military subject that I knew would take some time to research. I made him write a minimum of ten pages siting at least 5 different sources. He had to be gramtically correct and his spelling had to be good.
It took him his whole 96 weekend to do it. Needless to say he made sure he corrected himself so he didn't lose any more of his free time.

Is this Sgt late for work because he "wants" to be late for work? Is he late because he pulled over and helped a lady change a tire? Is he late because he "thought" the traffic at the front gate was going to be gone before he got there? Is there an accident that he happened to be behind?
Sometimes, Marines just can't get up. I'm almost willing to bet, one of the times he came in late is after several days of coming in early and staying late.
I used to have a Marine that came late to work (chow hall) at least once a month. HE was the LAST Marine that I would ever, ever allow to leave early. Now, I know a lot of Marines now the goofyass hours FS works. I would always reward my Marines for coming to work squared away (I know, I know) with fresh haircuts on Monday, bust their asses during the month, etc etc. Of course everything was noted in monthly counselings as well. This Marine was as hard a worker as I ever seen. He would do whatever he was asked...on duty and off. If he was off, and our SNCOIC called Marines to volunteer, he would 99% of the time volunteer. All of my Marines (on my watch) knew of this reward system and if anyone complained, we all agreed to kill it. I never had a Marine say he/she didn't want to participate by the way. :)
But, to put paper on someone for rarely coming in late and letting this guy slide IS WRONG. I'm not saying this is what's happening...

verbal counsel has to be the first step but I would have a standing policy that if anyone is late without a good excuse (call first) that xxx is the punishment. in my opinion to be on time is to be late. get to work early and get squared away
you can't let one person set a precedent

I have had the same problem with a Marine Sgt as well. At first I asked him why and he gave all kinds of off the wall excuses. But as we all know excuses are like crap they always stink. The second time I gave him a written counseling. The third time I typed up a 6105 and said if it happens again he can come in on his own, sign it and then I'll forward it up. As a Sgt you know that will be a big A on the fitrep which will pretty much end it. He has since changed and has always shown up to work early. Try that approach and it it doesnt work then they need to go. When you deploy and he shows up late and misses the flight what then, a deserter.

Thanks for all the imput. I myself would only put paperwork to a Marine as a last resort. I remember my MSgt used to tell me if I messed up I was typing up my own 6105. I remember one time my CWO secured me, but wanted me to call him and say I was ok...all I was doing was picking a Marine up from the airport, but I didnt call in. They gave me duty for 48 hrs straight! As a Cpl lol. Definetly should've called.
Thanks again for all the advise.

Yes, but I'm from another era. No ' counseling' or other 'touchy-feely' .The first time late, a good chewing out. Severity of the chewing depending on the extent of the lateness. The next time, appropriate punishment. Hell, when I was PFC, I was 6 hours late off a weekend., Got busted to Pvt. and awarded 3 months EPD. In effect that meant no liberty Mon-Fri since the EPD was from 1730-1930.
Do you still use Liberty cards? A man's liberty card could be misplaced. No liberty until it was found or the
1stSgt made a new one.

I will not be too sarcastic here if at all, but 1 this Marine is a Sgt. How about applying leadership and common sence. First he needs to get to the root of the problem to assess the situation. If I were him I would find out what is causing this Marine to be late and see if there is a fix. If it is just plain laziness well you can start by having that Marine stay an extra 15 mins for every 1 min he is late. Add some bks beautification into that and even an EMI on the punishments for being UA so he knows what will happen when he continues to gaff off his duties. Obiviouly do a formal counseling stating these corrective measures and how to achive them. If the Marine still does this on a consitant basis then charge him with UA. I hate paperwork as much as the next guy, but if a Marine is not willing to help himself then how far do you go. MCMAP combat conditioning offers great incentive on the purpose of being on time if your creative... Hence no IT now since that is bad (not me saying this), and cleaning every weapon in your platoon is always fun.
GREAT IDEA, LETS MAKE THE MARINE STAY 5 EXTRA HOURS FOR BEING 20 MINUTES LATE. god forbid you are EVER late
in order to have common sense, you should at least be able to spell it right!
not all people can help themselves, some people need others to help them get through certain things.
you must do the mcmap combat training with him, otherwise it is called hazing. HAZING HAZING HAZING!
you cannot make a Marine clean every freaking weapon in your platoon, that is freaking hazing.

First of all, hazing is a myth. It was invented by sh*tbags that were crying about being punished for their own mess-ups. Second, sometimes physical correction is needed when the person you're dealing with is an idot and can't comprehend words. Now, I see it as somewhat of a last resort. This is before paperwork is filed. (Depending on the situation of course.) But, muscle memory teaches better than words in many cases. Look back to boot camp. if you messed up and got caught, up to the quarter-deck you went. And hopefully you learned better because it sucked being up there.
On the topic at hand, it sounds like this is a common occurance. At which point, you need to find out why this is happening. If they say it's because they're going out on the night before work, give them a verbal counseling that if they conitue to do so, formal paperwork will be brought up and libo restriction will be recomended. That's usually a lot of help. Because we all love our libo and don't want it d*cked with. Taking away freedom is also a hell of a motivator for correction.
So, chicken little, put down your little "hazing horn" and learn a few things by reading what leaders put down.

OK name calling just reflects your limited ability to think so take some deep breaths before you type. I didnt compare felons to Marines thats the whole point if Felons can be on time then it should not even be an issue for marines - everyone has isolated issues but obviously if this has become an issue enough to require discipline then it is more than an isolated issue. Good for you not being late me either - i would get fired unless there was a resonable excuse.
Now hun the the whole point to this is it is the marine core - get there 30 minutes early and you wont be late then you wont have to clean everyones weapons!

There are posters that are leaving the forum and afraid to post because of agressive threatening bullies like yourself and I wont tolerate being personally attacked in a public forum any more than i will be in a public facility.
I have given this some considerable thought and switched hats to my corrections hat and I think I have an answer. In Texas DOC we use a form of treatment called Behavior Modification. It simply is the recieving of new information internalizing and accepting information and you have a behavior change. Now thinking along those lines lets address the problem
You are creating fine tuned machines in the Marines that in theory and concept all respond the same to said task.
The problem is you have canidates from all walks of like that show up for this training so each needs tuning in different manners to obtain the expected result.
There is a difference between lazy and undisciplined. A person can like to work and in fact do a really good job at it but have no discipline and a disciplined person can be lazy as all get out, so they cant be addressed the same. Some kids are raise in a household that works like hell but never cleans thier house or the oppisite they have everything immaculate but wont hold a job. In this instance a soldier that works like hell but on his own time frame.
This soldier knows he cant be late every day but he knows he can pull it off occassionally and validate it by his pace of work. In comes the need for behavior modification.
He needs to gain new insights to the meaning of discipline - thats your call the level and amount but it is neccessary to produce the kind of soldier your looking for.
Remeber lazy gets you killed lack of discipline gets your buddy killed
Hope it helps i'm off to shop!

M
This is my point right here! EXACTLY you are calling us soldiers when you are referring to the problem that the intial Marine was discussing, there is your exact problem right there Civilian. We are Marines not soldiers and if you knew anything about the Marine Corps then you would know that we don't like being called soldiers. Now please please I am begging you, call my CO or my Gunny and tell him exactly what I said so I can have a great laugh when I go into work on Monday. Actually I doubt they would even bring it up to me, they would hang up on your ass and laugh in your face

I would be here for days if I tried explaining everything.
Pretty much because I am tired of all the retarded things that I do
I've been to Iraq 3 times and Afghanistan once and I haven't even ended my 1st enlistment yet. I do have a 5 year contract. I am tired of living in the barracks, I want my dog back. I want a relationship that will actaully last and not be married to the Marine Corps. I want some privacy, I don't want to have to spring clean field day every monday because the squadron guns is mad at two Marines in my unit so he punishes everyone. I am a grown ass man and don't need someone else coming into my room to check on me. I want some freedom and I can make so much more money on the outside and already have jobs locked down.

Yep thats basically all I have that can relieve my stress.
I've done my time plus some, I was sent to Okinawa after all my tours because I was practically useless to my old BN since I didn't want to voluntarily deploy again. So they traded me out for Marines that hadn't deployed yet. Once again I left my family, my fiancee and my friends because I wasn't worth anything to my BN anymore. They did that to 5 of us.

On a seriouse note you want to talk about Etiquette? There are posters that are leaving the forum and afraid to post because of agressive threatening bullies like yourself
Why am I a bully? Because I present a logical and defendable position? You have at least once by my count been caught making things up as you go along to defend your position, and I have no problem calling people out on that.
Why? Because it's a forum, and I don't have much else to do right now. If you really can't take me telling you you are wrong on the internet, you need to read a self help book or something.
and I wont tolerate being personally attacked in a public forum any more than i will be in a public facility. If I was yelled at called names and told to shut up I would press charges for assult. If I witnessed a soldier or Marine bahaving this way not only would I be appalled at his behavior but I would immediately ask for his rank and unit.
When have you been personally attacked. Seriously. And as for the public facility statement, you are here by your own choice, putting your own opinions out there out of your own free will.
It isn't like you walked into the grocery store and I blasted through a wall of toilet paper and said "YOU ARE SO WRONG MEL44 LOLROFLMAO!"

Really? Bullied? Really? Come on. You have strong opinions here from military men and women. If you have been affilitated with the US Military for any amount of time you know that you get a much stronger reaction from our type than anyone else.
Not to mention, look at the bar, you are in the Marine Corps forum. We get pretty rambunctious in here, and if you can't handle it, there's plenty of other forums you can post in. As to you giving your husbands rank and unit, go ahead. Post someone's personal information on the WWW for anyone to see. When he starts getting emails on his work computer I'm sure he'll have a problem with it.
I stand by what I think...anonymously.

I did get used like a old towel and then thrown away. All of my officers and higher enlisted are completely aware of why I am getting out and support me 100 percent. They are pissed and blame the Marine Corps for the crappy enlistment that I have had. I know the transition can be really tough but I think I can handle myself and in the long run I will be more than ok. I'm 24 and feel like I am 40 so thats another reason why I am getting out, I've been broken a couple times. I am not getting forced out either, I am just leaving. I have a huge bonus and it still won't make me reenlist and I think that says something.
I've got more deployments than the majority of the Marines in the Corps and all in a mere 5 years. They weren't MEU deployments or fun deployments to Thailand or what not, all 4 of mine were to a war zone.

I was just pissed that damn near everyone in the forum was just talking about frying a Marine. Crap happens, lots of crap happens. I have never been late, like I said but that is me, just me. I had a Cpl who showed up late 5 times in one month, sometimes it was 10 minutes and sometimes it was 5 hours. So instead of going apeshit, I sat down and talked to him.
A month prior, one of the Marines in our shop died from alcohol poisioning while on leave back in the states. I had only known him for about 4 months, but the Marine who was late was best friends with him. He blamed himself and pretty much lost interest in everything, wasn't sleeping, drinking more than he used too and so forth and so that is why he was late. I sat down, talked to him and got another one of the Cpl's in my shop to make sure he is up and at work on time. Problem solved and he is now on his way to Iraq
You were also comparing us to felons and I didn't really find that amusing

Marines are more disciplined but sometimes Marines are late. Last week my gunny walked in 10 minutes late, no one said anything to him but if a Cpl had done the same then he got his ass chewed even if his reason for being late was better than the Gunny's. This will be his first deployment so I guess we will see how he does. I will be out before he gets back. I am just pretty glad that he is going over there now since nothing is really going on because I don't know how he will handle himself, but hopefully he will be ok

That's also just a rank has its' privelege kind of thing. Once you get a couple rockers you earn a few 10 minute passes. I'm not saying we get nastier as we get promoted...but certain liberties are taken by senior NCO's and SNCO's. That's just the cookie.

I'm not doubting you or arguing that point. But, don't forget that "we" are human too. I'm not sure what your rank is, but I would venture to guess that you have a few perks as well?
I'm sure I'm not the only SNCO that does this or has done this but here is my view. I have came in late for work before and I usually don't hear a word. One day, I came in late and one of my Sgt's said something while the office was readying for lunch. He made it "sound" like a joke, but he was serious. I stopped the whole office and explained why I was late that particular day. I spent the majority of the night and early morning in the hospital because my daughter had an allergic reaction to her inhaler. So, after her treatment at the Naval Hospital, we made it home. I got a few hours of sleep and the next morning the whole family was late getting up. To make a short story great...I was late for work.
My MSgt knew that I went to the hospital because I called him on our way. We live about 20 minutes from the Hospital. Anyway, I explained my situation to the Marines and they all understood. I also explained to them, seems they never realized this, that I allow them all the free time and liberty I can. You see, when the work is done, pt is done and the debrief is done for the day, I let them go home. I don't care if it's 1430..I send them home.
We usually keep someone back for "phone watch" until 1630, just in case a frost call comes from the Company. It seems the Sgt didn't even realize why I did this. They just thought I was being a "nice SSgt" by allowing them to leave early. When I explained to them, it was also a means for me to "make up" for me screwing up. Like, coming in to work late for example. After we all said our peace...they understood where I was coming from. They also know that I care for them and wouldn't take advantage of them, just because I could.
It's not a secret that SNCO/Officers have certain privileges as time goes by. But, I try to give my Marines the same treatment...whether they see it at first or not. Maybe the new GySgt is going to do the same thing for you guys?

Maybe the new GySgt is going to do the same thing for you guys?
that is def a legit reason for being late. HAHA no, this gunny really has no pull in our shop because our major is an ass and has no life because he is on an unaccompanied tour and likes to keep us there as long as he wants to stay there. Let me put it this way, we usually have all the work that we have to do done by 1000 because our shop is locked on and knocks everything out as soon as we get in. We literally sit there until 1630 every single day and not a minute earlier, we sit there staring at one another and picking our noses. I hate it

Kenny10,
Just out of curiosity what does your gunny do? I mean he is definitely not in a leadership position with respect to your shop. Regarding your Major what is he doing while you all are staring at each other? You think maybe he and the Gunny have something going on? Well, it is definitely possible! Well, maybe the Major would like to hold your buggers for you, have you asked him for his hand... that would be a proper place to store your buggers, after you pick your nose, you know that don’t you!
Of course I am being silly here! You have to take the good with the bad! It’s just life, and make fun of the stuff that just don’t make since. You know this is not right! as well as those in you shop! I am sorry you have experienced such leadership issues in your career, this I promise you, it is not like that in every unit!
So, let me know when you get back in, as far as mel… goes, like I said she is just a slimy puke civilian, like none other you will ever meet! Keep us posted.. who knows shit happens, and every now and then one turns into a golden turd! The next might be yours…. :Dhawk

It just doesnt make sence does it. I tlaked to my husband this morning about you and what you had been through and he said its a real shame that the good ones that work so hard get such a crappy deal. I feel sure you taugh this guy he'll do just fine. Some times we have to be afforded the opportunity to stand back from the picture to see just exactly how much we were a part of that picture and I have a feeling you pretty much filled up the whole canvas - Go home spend time with your folks, love on your fiance make some little marines and dont ever for a minute forget what you have done in your young life and how much you have given.

No he was just late, I heard him talking to my Gunny about how his alarm didn't go off
Well...I tried to give him the benefit of the doubt. :)

Good lord, you guys had all the fun this weekend. Again I appreciate the comments and suggestions (shout outs to Mel especially) to my topic, as well as all the other silliness I just read through.
Kenny if I dont see anymore posts from you good luck on the outside, but dont think theres not BS in the civilian world. I assure you there is plenty of it. I work with civilians and have a second job at a mall, if I were to go all Sgt like on a customer I assure you it would be the talk of the mall. The leadership that your complaining about now is rarely present, and they dont bother to explain themselves. Regardless of what you do, I wish the best for you.
By the way, sorry my punctuation and grammer sucks to all those who read my non sense, hopefully you dont hold it against me to much.
