I recently talked to my career retention officer or whatever he is called, because I am getting near the end of my mandatory drill segment of my reserve contract. I said that I would like to drill out the remaining part of my IR time in exchange for a promotion. He said that this was not possible, but I don’t believe that that is correct. I have seen many other Marines that are nearing the end of their contracts receive promotions to SGT and SSGT to continue drilling. Am I wrong or is the officer mistaken or being less then truthful?

He is not mistaken. You can get an automatic promotion to Sgt when signing a new reserve contract, however, you must be eligible. Even if you were able to get one I wouldn't take it. It screws you in the long run on promotion boards and such because it was given to you.

I dont see it necessarily "giving" a promotion. He's working for it, by continuing to drill.
Its not like the Marine Corps doesnt just give out promotios anyway. Active Marines..... when you first enlist and go to boot camp, you stay in just 6 months, the Marine Corps just gives you a promotion to PFC. Keep your nose clean for another 9 months, and the Marine Corps gives you another promotion to Lance Corporal. So, you just do as you're asked for 15 months, can you're given 2 promotions.
I think the Cpl actually volunteering and requesting to do something more than whats required warrants a promotion.
But, thats my 2 cents.

I don't know if i necessarily agree with LCpl Bradley, but i do like the sentiment. and i would really like the promotion. I'm just curious then, when do i re-enlist? at the end of my IR contract? that seems odd.
