Former Air Force Chief of Staff Gen. Larry Welch has been appointed to the Defense Policy Board, the Defense Department announced.
As part of the group, Welch will provide the Pentagon leadership with independent advice and opinions on defense policy matters.
Welch, the 12th Air Force chief of staff, retired in 1990. He has since served in leadership posts for a number of organizations, including the Institute for Defense Analyses, the Aerospace Education Foundation, the Air Force Academy Foundation, Sandia National Laboratory, the Joint Committee on Nuclear Weapons Surety, Air Force Space Command Independent Strategic Advisory Group, U.S. Strategic Command Strategic Advisory Group and the Missile Defense White Team.
Other new members of the Defense Policy Board are Stephen Biddle, Council on Foreign Relations; Richard Danzig, former secretary of the Navy; Robert Gallucci, former assistant secretary of state; Chuck Hagel, former senator from Nebraska; Robert D. Kaplan, Center for a New American Security; Andrew Krepinevich, Center for Strategic and Budgetary Assessments; Rudy deLeon, former deputy secretary of defense; John Nagl, Center for a New American Security; Sarah Sewall, Harvard University; and Wendy Sherman, former special adviser to President Bill Clinton.
