Rocket/Mortar attacks happened all the time in Iraq, thankfully the bad guys usually missed And of course, the bad guys are going to somehow get passed everyone else and run straight for you, you will of course be laying prone with your M16 at all times and magically also be able to concentrate on doing your job "ASAP". lol acting like nobody could sneak up on you and like youre always looking through your iron sights 24/7.....please |

I maintain the each branch of service serves its purpose.
My Grandfather served in the Army during the Vietnam war. My father served in the Marine Corps for four years and then married my mother who was currently serving in the Navy. Afterwards, he switched to the Navy. I have an older brother who served in the Army and then switched to the Air Force. My younger brother serves in the Air Force, and he just re-enlisted. Marines are cocky bastards, and it's simply because it's engrained in our personality. We're taught to overcome and adapt to any situation. Will there be gripes and complaints? Sure, but not as much as there would be from other servicemembers in the same circumstances. Most of our gear has been previously used or has been broken, and somehow, we still find a way to make it work. Our living facilities are not as nice, nor is our quality of life. I'll admit that there are sects within other military branches that have it a bit rougher than their counterparts because they are in Special Forces of some kind, but I think we're talking about the lifestyle of the majority within the branches of the military. Having family members that have served in all branches of the military, I can honestly say that Marines are the tip of the spear. My family members will agree with me. We maintain a higher standard in our appearance and in our discipline and peformance, because we know we have the reputation of being America's best. As far as the Marine Corps is concerned, we're not really needed. We have the Army for ground combat, the Navy for our waters, and the Air Force for air defense. However, America wants a Marine Corps because we have already proven our ability to be a force in readiness. Capable of being somewhere the President directs within 24 hours. We're the smallest branch, and that's how we're capable of such a feat. Our 234 years of history and existence are a testimony to our accomplishments. One of the biggest thing about the Corps is the fact that we are taught our history. You get about 200 academic hours in bootcamp learning about it. I mean, the information is slammed into our brains and I dobt there is one Marine you will meet that does not know the Marine Corps Birthday, or how we were established. I doubt there is a Marine that cannot tell you who the first female Marine was, or the first Marine aviator....Fact of the matter is that we take extreme pride in who we are and our history, because in some way we have an obligation to live up to the sacrifices of those who were called Marines before us. When you go through training for 13 weeks where you're taught to be proud of your heritage and to defend it, and you have the proof to back it up based on history, you're going to have a lot of cocky bastards, but with good reason. Therefore, it's easy to see how a Marine is going to defend the Corps and maintain it's the best branch of service when it comes to operational success and the ability to accomplish the mission the right way, the first time, and with less equipment. My little brothers and I give one another a hard time about the differences between the Air Force and the Marine Corps, but it's all in good fun and there's a mutual respect because there's a different purpose between the branches. With that purpose comes a difference in personality and what is and is not enforced. Marines are a designed to be warriors. There is a stricter discipline that is going to be enforced... designed to accept and follow orders without question, because it could be the overall factor in whether or not someone lives or dies. In a combat zone, regardless of MOS, every Marine is expected to be able to pick up a rifle, know its functions, and know how to use it if shit hits the fan. The majority of your Air Force cats will not be presented with that or faced with that situation. It is simply not their purpose to be a ground fighting force. Standards are different across the board. A servicemember in the Air Force has the right to be proud of their service and in what they do when it comes to protecting our Nation. However, I suggest they tread lightly when they try to compare an organization that has been in official existence for 62 years v.s. an organization that has been in existence for 234 years. Who has more history and accomplishments under their belt, and who has the over-all room to talk? Some of my favorite quotes about Marines come from movies I've seen because they are true: "The Marine Corps is like America's little pit bull. They lock us up, beat us, mistreat us, and then let us out to attack somebody." - Generation Kill "You ever had a pissed off Marine on your ass?" -Tommy Lee Jones in Rules of Engagement.
