I know that this sort of thing has been going on at Ft Bragg since Vietnam. Now Ft Hood too?

I have accompanied the Command and Housing Reps as a medical rep on a few housing inspections. Usually, these inspections were conducted because of complaints from neighbors, maintenance and others. Normally, I would say that this is a huge invasion of privacy, but it is included in the housing contract. These houses that we inspected were in huge need of attention. The problems ranged from child neglect to extremely dirty houses. You would be amazed at some of these houses. Even though these people are married, that does not relieve the military of being concerned about both their property and personnel.

I'm no slob at all, but what really upsets me is that when it comes to inspections, I'm pretty sure that people WILL find discrepancies. That said, I'll be damned if someone comes onto MY property, in an attempt to tell me how to live. If I don't feel like making my bed one morning, it's MY property. If there's a big stain on the carpet and I have to get up at 0400 every morning to get to work on time, then it's my perogative to wait until the weekend to move the furniture out the way to steam clean the carpets - and no one is going to tell me otherwise, because it's MY property. The only organization I need to answer to, in terms of housekeeping, is the HOA. I'll admit, the only HOA violation I'd ever had was a dead tree out in the front yard - and the only reason I was in violation of this, is because I know absolutely nothing about landscaping, and thought I could save this tree (spent some $$ on different fertilizers trying). I eventually had to pull it. Other than that, if someone wants to be a slob in military housing, that's one thing. If someone wants to be a slob out in town, then that's between the military member and the property owner/manager/landlord (unless these person[s] want to get the member's command involved - it's up to them). If the member owns his own property, it's between that member and the HOA. If HOA doesn't apply, then it's the member who's going to be hurting when he can't sell his house.

I don't see the big difference between barracks and house in this one. What kind of BS is it to say that just because I don't live in a house, you can violate my privacy and because you do, I can't go anywhere near you home? That's BS. You're a member of the military and Uncle Sam owns your ass. In case you don't know or just forgot, that means that he can do whatever the hell he wants with you until your contract is over. Don't like it? Then you shouldn't have joined buddy.

Of course it's a cliche. The point I am making is that there are so many more things that the military can require you to do than in the civilian world. But, it almost seems as though you have something to hide. Out in town, I could understand not letting someone into your house if you don't want to. On base though, that's the governments property, same as any barracks. So, before you get all insane on me again Ygg, go ahead and take it down a peg and not use minute quips as your basis for an argument.

I think that the Marine Corps should be allowed to inspect government owned properties as they wish, to include on base, and off base housing. However, the purpose of the inspection would be only similar to "health and comfort" rather than a typical "field day" type inspection. The inspections wouldn't be mandatory, but at the command's leisure, and could only take place at certain intervals, perhaps, once every quarter if they chose to do so. This prevents an invasion of privacy on the individual service member's part, and the ability to maintain quality homes for Marines that may live there in the future.
As far as property that the government does not own in any way, then I believe no one has a right to enter other than the owner of that home, his dependents, and those invited inside. If something is going down there that is so bad it's a misdemeanor/felony, then the Marine Corps will inevitably be involved down the road anyway. Barring that, stay outta the house. |
