Default Re: Imagery Analysis Retrain

1.Anyone with a class date in July? Looking for a Wingman to compare notes with on this upcoming PCS.

2.Any pointers on how to 'rock' the course? I downloaded the CFETP dated 31 May 09, and started looking at the 3 level core tasks.
Am I way off the mark here?

3.Thank you!

Well its obviously a no brainer that there is always exceptions to rules. Of course there are some stupid intel troops just like there are some stupid CEO's with no common sense. The point is that it is harder to get accepted into intel vs maintaince for a reason.

Every thing that Mr. Macanulty here has stated is pretty much all true. Many of you need to understand that the "grass" is always greener on the other side. My experiences as a 1N1 are decent but it is not as great as it may seem. I know the movies and the descriptions make Imagery Intelligence seem sooo very important or that you will know great amounts of secrets but the reality is that it is just like any other job. It gets redundant, repetitive, and boring at times. It has some rewards but its in fact just an analytical job that opens new doors for you.

These doors lead into great civilan job opportunities and a middle to upper middle class life style. Every 1N1 in the field knows this and most get out to pursue the better pay. The Air Force is forced to, in a sense, bribe enlisted members with bonuses to keep them in. Without the bonuses then heck, I might consider getting out if I wasn't set on doing 20 years. It makes no sense to get trained up for a technical job, score well on the ASVAB, gain a TS/SCI clearence, and in some cases pass polygraph test for no incentive. The fact of the matter is intelligence fields are in more demand then maintaince or services. Do not take offense to this but you can find any below average IQ 18 year old to perform maintaince on a tire or parachute but to trust him with a more sophfisticated job like intelligence isn't very wise (especially if he can't get a clearence due to previous troubles.)

It is like saying a computer tech shouldn't get paid more then a basic car mechanic. You can pull any idiot off the streets and show him 50 times how to change oil and he will eventually get it. It requires hardly any developed skill, intellect, or IQ. Working with state of the art computers or trouble shooting takes more skill set and intellect. Face it; intelligence, space systems, comms, etc... are just more in demand. I am not stating that maintainers aren't needed because they are but to say that intelligence shouldn't get bonuses is stupid. The bonuses are a big deal to me because I feel my job skill is worth more and respected more. Why should I settle to get paid as much as a person who hands out towels at the gym and got a 40 on the ASVAB?

Some of you state that you do not care about the bonus because your at least happy you get to do a new intelligence job that makes a difference. That is like me finishing my degree, graduating OTS, and commissioning but stating I do not need officer pay (enlisted will do) because I am happy to at least be an officer. What a crock!! You earned the job and if you all pass the 1N1 course that bonus will taste so much better.

Wow... your pretty full of yourself aren't you. Can I call you Brian? Because I feel a mentoring session coming on. I would have expected more from an or soon to be instructor. IQ's...really? You went there... so I guess yours is really high...huh? It must be be off the charts, because your touting it pretty hard. Kinda like a badge of honor or something.

You see young padawon, in the real world (not the WOW world) you don't have to to say things that aren't true to be cool, hell you don't have to become an instructor to gain respect. People will see you for who you really are without all the smoke and mirrors. Now, if you don't smoke, or don't own a mirror, then may i take the liberty to elaborate further? Don't take offense, but... You're a tool-bag...I don't know if you realized it yet, but I bet others have. We have a saying in MX ( you know the people you've offended with your pompous attitude.) Those who can...do, those who can't... teach, and those who are smart...re-train? So if your not the first, or the later...well i guess your not a doer are you? Which by proxy means I can't learn anything from you, and by proxy means you can't teach anything, and lastly by proxy means your a do nothing toolbag...that wants to be and act important, but isn't. Generally speaking of course. Now your entire first year knows it brian-jp-harris and I can't wait to eat your lunch and make you feel like a total stranger in your own classroom. O' ya the ASVAB is a a tool to gauge the aptitude of an individual for a specific skill set or in other words a natural ability... Funny, I didn't know there was Toolbag AFSC? I think you would be a natural. IQ...really? the nerve of some people.

Full of myself? No, straight foward and realistic, yes. I never once thought my IQ was off any kind of charts. Do I think its above average? Maybe, just a tad. Motivation and ambition dictate most of my thinking. Before I came into the Air Force I knew excatly what I wanted to do and it had to be something technical. I watched my farther and grandfather earn an uppermiddle class lifestyle by doing technical jobs in the USAF and gaining that experience. They got well paying jobs on the outside because its what the companies demand. Sorry if it seems brash but manual labor, maintaince, services or social services does not pay. Can some enjoy it and have a happy life? Sure, no pun intended but don't act like the general maintence population is brighter then the intel population.

It appears you are trying to undermine my credability by thinking I have no real world experience but only in a game called World of Warcraft (WOW). Nice try but I do not and have not every played that nerdy game. You can ask philmacjr about his old 1N5 co-workers playing that garbage while we studied for class, had fun, socialized, and accomplished stuff in our lifes.

You have, again, failed at making me feel "toolish." I did not volunteer to be an instructor and even denied the non-vol orders once but got hit with them again after I re-enlisted. Was I happy at first? No, but I am here to make the best of it and gain more career experience. I am in no way, shape or form some kind of egotistic person who has to have some kind of authority to feel good about myself. Conterary to your belief, I do not have any desire to act important or fake. I am real and to the point and philmacjr can atest to that because quite frankly him and I are very easy people to like and get along with.

The name is Brian J. Pharris to clear up and misconceptions. My viewpoint on the vast majority of maintence personnel remains. Just like my viewpoint that most officers are brighter people then the enlisted corps. Just like my viewpoint that the Air Force has brighter people then the Army or Mariens. You need to quite living in a dream world because you and I both know life is full of different classes of people. It is just the order of things. All I said was maintence, in general, doesn't have a job skill that is demanded because it doesn't take a whole lot of intellect. Like I said there are exceptions and many a maintainers can out smart, reason, and perform better then some intell troops but usually those maintence NCOs usually end up cross training into Intell anyway. I am sorry that you feel this seems pompous but it is the truth. What if you heard some Army grunts bragging about how they were awsome and just as smart as any Air Force maintainer? You'd naturally think to yourself that they were dillusional because if they were smarter then why would they pick the worst job (which has no real world usage) in the military. It's like 25 year old McDonald's workers thinking they were just as smart as computer system guys. They are not smart because they didn't apply themselves in school and since they didn't apply themseleves they have a crappy/unskilled job and since they have a crappy job they are not respected.

I only posted in this thread to add onto philmacjr's argument about wanting the bonus. Ever heard the expression, "Work smarter not harder?" That is how I view life and as far as I am concerned serving my country, advancing my technical/demanded career, and getting paid good for it is logically the smart choice. Why would being a maintainer or a towl hander outter at the gym, which both have skill sets that the world does not demand higher then intell or say space systems, be woth my time? It simply is not worth my time. My brother is a mechanic and I truly respect his desire and love for his career doing it. I love cars too and do alot of my own work but I'd be a fool to think I could go far in life doing it. Do I think I am some kind of know-at-all who will be some great person? Not at all. I just try to set myself up for the best possibilties and I know I still have alot to learn. I know I would probably enjoy some of the electronic maintence work and it does indeed pay outside but again within the military they often get treated worse and get no bonuses therefore offer no incentive for me vs intell, space systems, comms.

Anyway, if anyone has any questions about the careerfield, ops tempo, course, what to expect, etc... just let me know otherwise I'll be looking foward to seeing you around Good Buddy.

What's funny is a lot of prior Maintenance people cross over into intel and we scratch our heads as to why the ASVAB requirements are indeed higher. I don't know, it just seems to me that I felt twice the stress in maintenance that I ever felt in intel. It was a good stress too...the kind of stress that made you work fast cause you loved what you did. There was nothing like the feeling of troubleshooting an airplane on EOR, weapons loaded, and all eyes were on you to get it in the air.

Myself, I was forced retrained into intel. I didn't even put it on my list of jobs to retrain into. However, the attitude of a lot of intel people is to get their experience and leave. That is fine and that's why I got dragged into it. However, those same intel people better not preach to me about serving for love of country or the USAF. They are the last people I want to hear that BS from.

Summed up...you serve yourself, not the USAF or your country.

Is there any AFI's that I should brush up on before I jump into this career field?

^^^No not really. I mean philmacjr already covered the SRB AFI issues for re-trainers. Other then that its just like the rest of the Air Force. Of course its AETC so be ready to shape up. Prior party students will get treated better then the pipeliners but be prepared to have to do little things like knock on the instructors office stating "Student Entering"......stuff like that....... Other then that you guys will have fun. The town is a bit small but it has everything you need. There is a college in town so for you single guys good number of bars and few clubs to pick up the ladies.

To the one guy who downloaded the CFETP, you don't have to concern yourself with those in Tech School. Usually you get into those for your 5 skill level at your first duty station.

The 1N1 course is going through a revamp right now. The new course is like 4-5 months now and not the 6 anymore. I believe they have started teaching it to the students as of late Oct.

There are 1N1 A's like the regular geospatial anaylst and the 1N1 B's who are the new targeteers. I heard from the flight chief that they are planning on 1 out of every 7 classes will be pulled to be 1N1 B's. So the 1N1 B's get a different set of blocks for that job skill.

Hope this helps.

Might want to let them know to hone up on their croquet skills for those Friday afternoon get togethers down at the Lake Nasworthy Yacht Club with all the other high IQers. Retraining into intel is like a real life Eddie Murphy in Trading Places.

"Looking good Billy Ray!!!"

"Feeling good Lewis!!!"

Whew. Was all that arguing necessary? LOL. I'm not trying to stir anyone up, everyone had their points. I myself do kinda look at the bonus as an extra because I'm almost 100% positive I'm not getting it. But who knows, there's almost a small chance....I guess....maybe not in this case.....lol. I'm more than likely reenlisting in order to receive the retraining because I only have 8 more months to extend before I hit the 23 month max. But it's cool....I see everyone's points on this issue....really. I just really do want to get out of the Vehicle MX career field because I don't see a good future in it if I wanted to get out right now. So I'm more interested in learning a different skill and getting a chance to do something I can be more proud of as well as having doors open up for something better than working at a dealership. I sure as hell hope that bonus sticks around for the next time I have to reenlist.....show me the money! LOL.

Anyhow, to those that are either at the school as students or instructors, is there a number I can call to get a hold of the schoolhouse? I've read of people getting class dates after 1.5 months, but that's all the time I have left in this enlistment. In fact, I probably have less time than that. So I was hoping I could contact them and ask if they can somehow request someone be put in one of the classes a bit quicker than 1.5 months. Yeah...I'm probably reaching, but I'd like to avoid any more hassles with this retraining. Thanks guys...everyone has really good info on here.
