Fatigues really were nice. I miss them.
I suppose once I leave the service, I won't care as much. They were far superior to anything the USAF has told me to wear as a utility uniform since. |

Agreed! There was nothing wrong with the greens. Only complaint I had as a young man is that I was always having to adjust the length of the pants...still growing in those days I guess. But they were cheap, comfortable, durable, wash-and-wear and they were uniquely Air Force. You had the tuck versus untuck shirt option, could convert to short sleeves in garrison (still had to keep long sleeves for the MoBag) and I'll admit that I liked the unit hat thing too.

WOW sounds like i may have struck a chord here... maybe the AF should just go back to what everyone seems to like?

Suggested and ignored. Believe me, it came up when the whole "new uni" thing came out but someone wanted "tiger stripes"...

Also I guess after 4 years, I have come to accept the fact the force just will always have bad unis. I mean, for Cold War era we had our stuff together. Then once the Berlin Wall fell so did our the identity. I really was, when I was a kid, really wanting to wear that SAC uni from Wargames. Now all that's left are these unis left for models. "Three buttons is a little 90's"-Lucius Fox, The Dark Knight As for the good chunk AF jobs behind the wire they should have to dress like you're in the field. Just as there was a desert uniform there should be a stateside one probably similar to that Stargate uni, NO UNNEEDED CAMO, who are we going to hide from in a desert designed uniform that looks like a bloby tiger while we are in places like Minot or Barksdale? This should be reason enough to have a military-wide standardized camo design for the field, screw the branch camo look bollocks. As for the branch uniform preference, leave that to those that work in those fields. I guarantee the needs of Security Forces are different than the need of combat ops and their needs are different than those in support. My recommendation for dress: *Go back to the dress cap and use garrison in normal day to day activities not at all activities *Army dress style coat in a midnight blue, not a violet blue w/ silver AF Dept roundel buttons *Officers will have a silver brand on cuffs, but rank will remain on shoulder, enlisted rank on coat still remains on arm *Black trousers, silver brand for nco and officer, and optional black skirt *Keep the light blue undershirt, tie and tie tab /but "all" rank goes on shoulder not just enlisted on arm while wearing just light blue shirt This look reminds people we are not the Army but yet how we honor our former ties with the branch much in line with how the Marines have the mandarin collar that's also on the Navy summer uni. It's also a look that falls in line with the many uniforms of our sisters services, oddly black and blue. As for garrison wear, it should be just that reserved for the field. It cuts costs and it puts the emphasis of the uniform in fighting in the field not making fashion choices. Digi-stripes? Really? The idea should always be are we giving our fighting AIRMEN the means to conduct business in theater properly and effectively. Camo pride? Whoever came up with that idea needs to retire, you're like the school representatives predicting dropouts only to be proven wrong when rates go up and schools are crowded. No insight to the future. Pride in uniform appearance has always been in the service dress, period. Okay my rant is over, as you were. Last edited by GENERALBULLDOG54 : 11-01-2009 at 12:45 AM. Reason: spelling |

Zwerge, the point of the rant was that
A: In order to stop the ongoing complaining about our uniforms my idea call for 3: service dress, garrison and stateside B. The problem with our current uniform has always been it doesn't look military at all, The Dark Knight quote was just poking fun at its 3 button look C. My idea for the look calls on an approach that call for a service dress that calls for individual identity as well as hearkens back to historical Army Air Corps roots D. Say my reasoning for having a unified US camouflage system, individual Air Force garrison and stateside uniforms, and state once and for all that in order to create an identity that is genuine and ours as a service we must create something that is functional for our service, cost effective, and honors the history of the Air Force. If my rant seems unfocused, it is, that's why it's mentioned as a rant. While my idea was getting a point across of the points mentioned above I obviously must have missed my point. Hopefully my summary better illustrates the ideas I wanted to bring across when the new uniform is ever brought back again into the forefront. |
