How about you take a sub and make it "FEMALE ONLY", then you would not have to change a thing. I doubt the leadership would ever do that since it is way to risky. What happens when a female gets pregnant? The Navy has enough females to do this with one boat, maybe even two. For surface ships, I bet you could do three or four.

An all-female sub? And where, pray-tell, would you get qualified female submariners to run it? You have to integrate before you can de-integrate. I'm all for women on subs (integrated or otherwise), but your logic is faulty!

Using only the example of an attack boat, 1 of the 4 Crew's berthing areas would have to be used by females, as would 1 of the Heads and Shower areas. It is not feasible to strip 25% of the Crew to accommodate non-qualified female sailors. If it were, the Crew would be 25% smaller now.
Furthermore, what happens in the "Goat-Locker"? Can that be partitioned to accommodate female CPOs? The Wardroom? When integrating a Sub, compromise of operational readiness cannot be avoided. Or, must the Skipper insure that all Crewmembers are fully dressed before sounding General Quarters or Battle Stations? Heck, the passageways on subs are bi-directional and so narrow that just routine passing will require physical contact. Lastly, has anyone in authority consulted, or even considered, the Wives of Sub-Sailors? Are Sub-Sailor Wives immune from the seeds of doubt integration will plant? Is not the divorce rate in the Silent Service abnormally high now? Why is something that is not broken being disrupted? |

It can be done and most likely it will be done. Just like those predicting the end of the world when women were first put on surface ships, this too shall pass with only minimal disruption.

obviously this attempt is meant to satisfy a political component, not national security interests...

How about you take a sub and make it "FEMALE ONLY"?
And just how would they become "Qualified"? By learning the hard way? If they were to drive Submarines as they do cars when they can see what's around them, we'd be frequently replacing Boats at very great expense. Punching holes in the ocean and avoiding an undersea Mount is not the same as running into a shopping cart at the local Wal-Mart or cutting someone off at a highway merge. Yes, men have run Subs into things but it is miniscule as compared to the submerged distances Subs cover without mishap. As stated before, women would have to be integrated in the initial stages just to learn the simplest of things about operating a Sub. This post is not about a woman's ability to become "Qualified" or command a Sub. It's about how they get to that position. The long and short of it: If you aren't "Qualified" to be Ships' Company aboard a Sub, you aren't qualified to offer suggestion. Even ludicrous suggestions. I offer apologies if this post is insensitive but I do not temper or apologize for the reality of it. Bob Mahon (SS)
