Default Grooming Standards

In regards to female hair standards--If extensions such as braids, weaves, and what not are authorized, why are dreadlocs not authorized if properly groomed? There is really no real difference between braids and dreadlocs other than one is used with fake hair and the other is natural hair. There needs to be a changed to this standard.

No difference? Are you kidding? Braids at least have a neat, even appearance and a look of being cared for. The rows/braids are even and symmetrical…just like us sailors standing in ranks. Dreadlocks are the extreme opposite. They’re messy and they’re everywhere. Frankly they look like the tail of a horse that crapped and then sat in it.

"groomed locs" are neat in appearance. What everyone is looking are people who don't take care of locs as they should, because they can grow and look messy if you don't take care of them.

I have never seen dreadlocks that appear to be “groomed” in a military sort of fashion (and I've had lots of liberty in the Caribbean). Yeah, they may be clean and "groomed," but they're groomed to look messy. Search the internet and post a picture of “groomed” dreadlocks here and change my mind.

Here are a couple of photos. This is what they look like when taking care of. They are not groomed to look messy, what you are talking about are people you have seen with messy locs. I have seen plenty of women with locs that look great. Once long enough they can be pinned up in a bun like any other hairstyle.

These are braids...other than technique, what is the real problem that "some" people have with locs while in uniform. Locs can be neat and tied up in ponytails, buns, or whatever to create that military appearance.

Well, most of those pictures have way too much hair to get a Navy cover on even if pinned up. A couple are pinned up and still hang below the collar. Example, this one would require a Marge Simpson hat to cover.

But this one I don't have really have a problem with.

honestly, they all look nasty (from a military point of view). Even the one force said he didnt really have a problem with, still looks nasty. Yeah, I know thats how their suppose to look, and while I say they look nasty, I do find the dreadlock style pretty cool, just not for anyone in the military.

Oh, I concur with you. I'm just saying that IF the Navy were to allow them that it would probably be with very strict guidelines like in that 2nd picture.
