Most of the pics I put up where just different hairstyles. I was trying to show what groomed locs look like. All of the pics I put up you can braid it up and fasten the hair to your head, putting it under a hat will not be a problem. I plan to recommend a change to the regulations for female hair standards, it's gonna be a pretty good thing. This is not different from tattoo's, body piercings, etc. Just like the change came with the backpacks and permanent makeup. Hair standards must change also, this is 2009. The locs can be pinned up in a ponytail and out of the way once longer, it's not hazardous or anything like that. It's just the point that African American women who choose to wear there hair in it's natural state should be allowed to where loc's while in uniform.

Ok, I looked at all the pics and really the only decent one that would pass Navy standards would be the short version. I'm sorry but even females that wear long braids and tie them in a bun are out of regs 99% of the time. If you are active duty Navy then you should know ponytails are not authorized. Below is pulled directly from the Uniform Regs.
Ponytails, pigtails, widely spaced individual hanging locks, and braids which protrude from the head, are not authorized. Multiple braids are authorized. Braided hairstyles shall be conservative and conform to the guidelines listed herein. When a hairstyle of multiple braids is worn, braids shall be of uniform dimension, small in diameter (approx. 1/4 inch), and tightly interwoven to present a neat, professional, well groomed appearance. Foreign material (i.e., beads, decorative items) shall not be braided into the hair. Short hair may be braided in symmetrical fore and aft rows (corn rowing) which minimize scalp exposure. Corn row ends shall not protrude from the head, and shall be secured only with inconspicuous rubber bands that match the color of the hair. Appropriateness of a hairstyle shall also be judged by its appearance when headgear is worn. All headgear shall fit snugly and comfortably around the largest part of the head without distortion or excessive gaps. Hair shall not show from under the front of the brim of the combination hat, garrison, or command ball caps. Hairstyles which do not allow headgear to be worn in this manner, or which interfere with the proper wear of protective masks or equipment are prohibited. When in uniform, the hair may touch, but not fall below a horizontal line level with the lower edge of the back of the collar. With jumper uniforms, hair may extend a maximum of 1-1/2 inches below the top of the jumper collar. Long hair, including braids, which fall below the lower edge of the collar shall be neatly and inconspicuously fastened, pinned, or secured to the head. No portion of the bulk of the hair as measured from the scalp will exceed approximately 2 inches. Considering that long braids or locs are bulky, they would not fit Uniform regs. Sorry but I doubt you will get this changed but hey all they can do is say no. |

No. I think congress quietly passed a little known law last year that actually allows the military branches to take your birthday away. Dan

Claim the dreadlocks are a religious observance -- like a Sikh's hair and kirpan, or a Jew's yarmulke or a Muslim woman refusal to wear short-sleeved shirts. The PC military leadership will be tripping over their dicks to make an exception for you -- might make it mandatory for everybody!

I gave mine up years ago for Lent. I wasn't using it anyway.

How about women that need to shave their face? I'm not trying to make a joke here. I've seen more than a few women that would seriously get in trouble for not shaving if they were men.

Before we change the Uniform Regs anymore, how about if we try to enforce the ones we already have...
All we need, sailors talking on cell phones, wearing backpacks, with dreadlocks. Or maybe I'm just old. |
